Chapter 124: Crack! Crack!! Crack, crack, crack!!!
Lying under the blanket, Zhou Sinian slowly realized that his clothes had been changed. His face turned a little red as he curled up in the blanket, looking at Ming Dai.
“Ming Dai, did you change my clothes for me?”
Ming Dai’s hand froze as she was about to set down the bowl. Her expression became slightly awkward.
The situation had been urgent that morning. In her previous life, she had been a doctor, so she hadn’t thought much about it and simply stripped Zhou Sinian to change his clothes.
But now, being asked about it by the person himself, she suddenly panicked.
“Ahem… well, um… your clothes were soaked with sweat, so I just helped you change them, okay? I didn’t look!”
Zhou Sinian’s face grew even redder. His eyes, glistening with moisture, looked at Ming Dai, as if he wanted to say something but hesitated. He seemed a little embarrassed.
Ming Dai grew more flustered. Her face began to burn as well.
Would Zhou Sinian blame her?
People in this era seemed to be very conservative.
After all, he was a proper young man, and she had seen everything!
That did seem a little excessive…
Should she take responsibility for this?
If he asked her to take responsibility, how could she gently explain that she was still young and it really wasn’t convenient right now?
While Ming Dai was tangled up in her thoughts, Zhou Sinian’s mind was equally busy.
Oh!
Ming Dai was so kind!
Ming Dai cooked for him! And the food tasted amazing!!
Ming Dai gave him clothes to wear! Even gave him a red headscarf and a red silk scarf!!
Now, Ming Dai had even personally changed his clothes!
It really was just like what the little potatoes had said!
Zhou Sinian made up his mind, and with some embarrassment, he spoke softly.
“Ming Dai, you’re so kind. You give me food to eat, clothes to wear, and even changed my clothes for me. You’re just like Goudan’s mother!
Goudan’s mother also gives him food, clothes, and helps him change. But I think you’re even better than Goudan’s mother. So… can I call you ‘Mom’?”
Crack!
Crack!!
Crack, crack, crack!!!
Ming Dai stood there frozen, staring blankly at Zhou Sinian’s bashful expression, unable to react for a long time.
Zhou Sinian, however, completely misunderstood the terror in her eyes as surprise. He thought she really wanted to be his mother. He couldn’t help but pull the blanket over his head and giggle happily underneath.
The muffled giggles snapped Ming Dai out of her petrified state. In her heart, she smacked herself ten times.
Serves you right for not learning your lesson!
Serves you right for overthinking!
Now look, you’ve become a mother without warning!
Meeting Zhou Sinian’s eyes peeking mischievously from under the blanket, Ming Dai forced a smile that was uglier than crying.
“Go to sleep, my dear big son!”
Fine. If she had to be a mother, so be it. After all, she wasn’t the one losing out!
From that moment on, Ming Dai no longer dared to overthink their relationship.
So much so, that when someone later confessed to her, she took it as a misunderstanding. That made someone’s road to proposing very rough and full of obstacles.
Ming Dai could only sigh — self-inflicted misfortunes truly could not be escaped!
After playing around for a bit, Zhou Sinian’s eyelids started to droop, and he slowly drifted off to sleep.
Ming Dai quietly slipped out and casually ate some dinner.
Because she was worried that Zhou Sinian might develop another fever during the night, Ming Dai moved the small massage bed into his room, planning to stay and watch over him.
Sure enough, in the middle of the night, Zhou Sinian’s muffled groans woke Ming Dai. She sat up abruptly, turned on the light, and rushed to his bedside.
He had not woken up. It seemed he was trapped in a nightmare.
The bulging veins on his forehead and his twisted expression showed how much pain he was in.
Ming Dai held down his flailing hand and checked his pulse. She then pulled out her golden needles again, disinfected them, and began to apply acupuncture.
Only after the needles were in place did Zhou Sinian finally calm down, collapsing onto the bed as if completely drained. His brows remained furrowed, his eyes closed, and his trembling eyelashes hinted at the turmoil inside.
Ming Dai looked at Zhou Sinian, who seemed like a completely different person from the cheerful boy he had been during the day, and she felt a headache coming on.
If this knot in his heart wasn’t resolved, his emotional swings would continue, and another fever would be unavoidable.
His body, already frail and weak, couldn’t endure repeated high fevers.
But Ming Dai didn’t dare to question him recklessly. His avoidance during the day, whether deliberate or subconscious, had already made it clear that he didn’t want to talk about it.
If she pressed too hard, it might trigger him and worsen his condition.
For the moment, Ming Dai could only do her best and wait.
Once he finally calmed down and fell into a deep sleep, Ming Dai removed the needles, wiped his body clean, and helped him change into fresh pajamas and new bedsheets.
This time, she did so without distraction, with a completely steady heart.
Her son — what was there to be embarrassed about?
Throughout the night, Zhou Sinian woke up three times, each time with a twisted expression, crying out, “Blood! So much blood! Run! Run!”
In the end, as Ming Dai held him down to stop him from struggling, Zhou Sinian suddenly opened his eyes.
His pupils were unfocused, his gaze blank as he stared at her figure. In a soft, helpless voice, he murmured, “Mom…”
Ming Dai stared at his eyes slowly closing again, unable to come back to her senses for a long while.
She could feel that the “Mom” he had just called out wasn’t meant for her.
Was Zhou Sinian missing his real mother?
With a sigh, she accepted her fate and continued to take care of her dear big son.
After that exhausting night, both of them slept until ten o’clock the next morning.
Zhou Sinian woke up first.
He blinked his eyes, stared at the ceiling for a moment, then was distracted by his constantly growling stomach. At the same time, he noticed that his pajamas had been changed again.
Oh!
He knew it!
His Ming Dai was definitely better than Goudan’s mother!
Goudan had said that his mom only changed his clothes once at a time, but Ming Dai had already changed his clothes twice!
Ming Dai: Heh… you counted too few!
Ming Dai was woken up by the sound of his cheerful giggles and, for a moment, thought there were chickens clucking in her space.
She climbed off the massage bed in a daze, eyes still closed, and shuffled over to Zhou Sinian’s bedside. Without opening her eyes, she reached out, found his wrist, and took his pulse.
Zhou Sinian was startled by the deep black circles under her eyes and didn’t dare speak. He obediently offered his left hand, then his right hand.
Only after checking his pulse did Ming Dai open her eyes. She covered her mouth and yawned.
“You stay in bed and behave for the next two days,” she said. “I’ll bring the food to you. Rest well before you think about playing, okay?”
Zhou Sinian hesitated for a second, but after meeting Ming Dai’s gaze, he nodded vigorously.
Satisfied, Ming Dai left. She needed to wash up first and then cook for both of them.
When Ming Dai came back with breakfast, she found Zhou Sinian twisting and squirming under the blanket on the bed, moving around like some sort of possessed worm.
Ming Dai frowned. “What are you doing? Why aren’t you lying still?”
Zhou Sinian’s voice, laced with a hint of tears, came muffled from under the blanket. “Ming Dai, can I get up?! I need to pee!!!”
……!!
(SakuRa T/N: Honestly, I should probably change the title to “In the 1970s: Picking Up a Madman as My Son” xD)
