Such things had happened too many times, and she had become accustomed to ignoring them.
“You don’t care, but I do. You shouldn’t have to endure these things,” Su Yu said with a furrowed brow. “If you don’t want to get married right away, we can have an engagement first.”
With an engagement, he could give Wang Jinhe a betrothal gift, and he wanted those people to know that Wang Jinhe was someone they could only look up to.
Wang Jinhe looked at Su Yu in a daze, her brows furrowed tightly, as if she really cared about this matter.
“You…”
“Xiao He, because of me, you’ve endured so much unfair treatment over the years. Even now, with me around, they still treat you this way, all because we haven’t married yet, right? I don’t want to hear anyone say such things anymore,” Su Yu said very seriously to Wang Jinhe.
Wang Jinhe looked at Su Yu with a wry smile. “That’s all in the past.”
“The past doesn’t mean it never happened,” Su Yu insisted.
Wang Jinhe looked at Su Yu with a wry smile but before she could respond, Gu Shi entered from outside.
“Xiao He, Su Yu is sincere. If you insist on waiting, it might not be a good idea. If you don’t want to get married so soon, you can follow Su Yu’s suggestion and have an engagement first,” Gu Shi said to her daughter.
Wang Jinhe looked at her mother with a troubled expression. “Mother, I…”
“Xiao He, do you know why, even though everyone knows that Xiao Bao’s father has come, people are still saying such things about you?” Gu Shi asked her daughter seriously.
Wang Jinhe looked at Gu Shi in astonishment, not knowing what to say.
“It’s because you and Su Yu are still in an ambiguous relationship. In everyone’s eyes, you’re still pregnant out of wedlock,” Gu Shi said to Wang Jinhe in a serious tone.
Su Yu nodded in agreement. “Mother is right. You can choose when to get married, but we must have an engagement as soon as possible.”
Seeing that they were all looking at her like that, Wang Jinhe could only nod and say, “Okay.”
Su Yu’s previously less-than-pleasant expression instantly brightened.
“I’ll prepare everything,” Su Yu said to Wang Jinhe with a smile.
Wang Jinhe looked at Su Yu with some concern. “Just take it easy and don’t scare anyone.”
“Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing,” Su Yu said with a smile.
Wang Jinhe shook her head and said, “Never mind, as long as you’re happy. By the way, tomorrow, you and I will go to the village chief’s house.”
“The village chief’s house?”
“Yes, even though the village chief didn’t openly support our family at the time, he secretly protected me and the child. If it weren’t for the village chief insisting that we weren’t from the Xie family’s village and couldn’t be harmed, the child and I might have died a long time ago,” Wang Jinhe said to Su Yu.
Su Yu immediately understood upon hearing this, and it confirmed his suspicions.
“Alright, we’ll take some gifts with us tomorrow.”
“Okay.”
After settling the matter of the engagement, Gu Shi informed the Wang family, and they were all very happy. Grandpa Wang even began to choose an auspicious date.
Seeing their joy, Wang Jinhe felt that agreeing to it didn’t seem like a bad idea.
The next morning, when Wang Jinhe woke up, Su Yu had already prepared everything.
Looking at the items on the table, Wang Jinhe stared blankly and asked Su Yu, “What’s all this?”
“Isn’t today the day we’re going to the village chief’s house? Are these items enough?” Su Yu looked at the items on the table with a furrowed brow, feeling that there might be something missing.
Wang Jinhe glanced at the items on the table, which included a tea set, fabrics, meat, wine, tea leaves, and more…
“These items are enough; if you take everything, you might scare the village chief,” Wang Jinhe said with a wry smile.
“Really? Both You and Xiaobao’s lives are worth much more than these items; you’re priceless,” Su Yu said straightforwardly.
Wang Jinhe twitched the corner of her mouth as she looked at Su Yu; she truly found him to be quite eloquent.
After having their meal, the two of them, along with Xiaobao, went to the village chief’s house.
The village chief was taken aback when he saw Wang Jinhe bringing Xiaobao along with a man. However, when he saw Su Yu’s appearance, he understood immediately that this was Xiaobao’s father.
“Village chief, thank you for taking care of Xiaohe back then,” Su Yu walked up to the village chief and thanked him directly.
The village chief was startled by Su Yu’s action; he hadn’t expected Su Yu to act this way.
“A small gift is just a token of our gratitude; please accept it,” Su Yu asked Yuanbao to bring the items closer.
The village chief was surprised again when he saw the items in Yuanbao’s hands. “Xiao He, what are you doing? You’ve already come; there’s no need to bring gifts.”
“You don’t need to worry about it, Village Chief; he just wants to express his gratitude,” Wang Jinhe said casually.
The village chief couldn’t help but laugh and sigh, “It’s not that simple. Even if it’s to express gratitude, you don’t need to bring so many gifts.”
He could tell that all the items Yuanbao brought were of high quality.
“Village Chief, Xiaobao’s and Xiaohe’s lives are more precious than these items,” Su Yu said seriously.
The village chief understood Su Yu’s meaning immediately and nodded, saying, “Since that’s the case, I’ll accept them. You’re a good young man. Thank you.”
The village chief nodded, “No need to be so polite with me. At that time, it was the only thing I could do. But is this the end for you two? Haven’t you thought about the future?”
Su Yu shook his head, “We’re planning to get engaged, and as for when we’ll get married, it depends on Wang Jinhe’s preference.” He didn’t want to rush Wang Jinhe into marriage.
However, he intended to bring his grandfather over, but as for his parents, there was no need.
“That’s good. Congratulations to you, Wang Jinhe. I hope you’ll have a good life together,” the village chief comforted Wang Jinhe.
Wang Jinhe nodded, “Thank you, Village Chief. I will do my best.”
“Good. By the way, Wang Jinhe, the people in the village were talking about your family selling melons yesterday. What are your thoughts on that?” the village chief asked Wang Jinhe.
Wang Jinhe considered for a moment before saying, “I’ll stick to my previous plan. Those who treated my family well in the past, I’ll help them earn money. As for the others, it will remain as it is.” She wasn’t the type to hold grudges but also won’t help those who had ill intentions towards her family.
The village chief chuckled and said, “As long as you both know what you’re doing.”
“Village Chief, those in the village who helped Xiao He before, we’ll bring them along to make money in the future. But as for the others, they shouldn’t have any expectations,” Su Yu said seriously.
The village chief looked at Su Yu’s stern expression and shook his head, “It seems that both of you have quite similar personalities, not one to forget a grudge easily.”
Su Yu nodded, “We can’t be taken advantage of. Wang Jinhe and I are not the type to repay evil with kindness. Those who are kind to us will receive double kindness in return, but those who treat us poorly won’t even get a glance from us.”
