Chapter 1
Su Ruanruan slowly accepted the reality—she had really transmigrated.
She had become the new owner of this body, an eighteen-year-old girl in the 1970s, who had just gotten married in a hurry. The original owner had grown up in the village, graduated from middle school, and had spent the last three years working in the fields.
Her parents, seeing that she had reached the right age, had asked someone to arrange a marriage for her. Coincidentally, the captain’s wife was looking for a bride for her youngest son, who was serving in the military. Since the captain’s wife was willing to offer a generous dowry, the marriage was quickly decided.
The captain’s youngest son, Fu Wenjing, had joined the army at sixteen and was now twenty-five years old. He had been serving for nine years and had never returned home even once during that time. However, he sent his military allowance home every month, and the amount increased every year.
The captain’s wife had wanted to arrange a marriage for him before, but since Fu Wenjing never came back, she had been unable to do anything about it. Now that he was approaching thirty, she grew anxious.
Out of desperation, she sent him a telegram claiming she was dying and insisted that he return no matter what.
At the same time, she began searching for a suitable bride in the village.
The original owner was at the right age, had delicate and pretty features, was educated, and was known for her diligence.
She quickly caught the captain’s wife’s eye, and before Fu Wenjing even returned, the marriage had already been decided.
As soon as Fu Wenjing arrived home, the captain’s wife pressured him to submit a marriage application and register for a marriage certificate.
That very night, they consummated the marriage.
Although arranged marriages were not entirely blind date in this era, they were not much better.
It was common for couples to meet only once before getting married.
The original owner had grown up hearing rumors in the village. People often said that Fu Wenjing, being a soldier, carried an aura of death. He had been away for so many years, showed no interest in marriage, and might have sustained hidden injuries from battles. If anyone married him, they might end up a widow for life.
Hearing such rumors repeatedly had planted deep fear in the original owner’s heart.
On the wedding night, she sat on the bed, waiting for Fu Wenjing to enter the room. But before he even stepped inside, she was so terrified that she died of fright.
And that was how Su Ruanruan had transmigrated into this body.
These memories…
Su Ruanruan almost wanted to look up at the sky and let out a long sigh.
What kind of situation was this?
Just as she was about to open her eyes and take a look at the room, she suddenly heard a creaking sound—the door had been pushed open.
This was followed by steady footsteps and the sound of the door closing again.
At this moment, the only person who could have entered was Fu Wenjing.
Su Ruanruan didn’t dare to open her eyes.
She shut them tightly.
To transmigrate and immediately face the wedding night—wasn’t this a bit too intense?
Before coming here, Su Ruanruan had been an orphan. She had spent years studying and working hard. Let alone experiencing a wedding night, she had never even held a man’s hand before.
She really had no experience in this at all!
She waited for a long time, but there was no movement. Her heart pounded even faster.
Then, she suddenly heard a cool and composed voice.
“I brought in some warm water. Do you want to freshen up?”
The voice was quite pleasant to the ear.
Su Ruanruan cautiously opened a small slit between her eyelids. The first thing she saw was a tall and straight figure standing by the bedside.
He was dressed in a green military uniform, his clothes impeccably neat, without a single wrinkle. Even though it was already summer, he had buttoned his collar all the way up.
His eyes were as deep as the night sky, his nose was high and straight, his lips thin, and his jawline was sharp and well-defined. His lips were pressed together slightly, giving him a restrained and distant air.
Even though Su Ruanruan had seen plenty of handsome male celebrities on television, she still couldn’t help but praise him in her heart when she saw Fu Wenjing’s face clearly—he’s so handsome!
“Do you want to wash up?” Fu Wenjing asked again.
Hearing his voice, Su Ruanruan snapped out of her daze.
“Yes… yes!”
Flustered, she quickly sat up, slipped on her shoes, and got out of bed. She walked to the washstand and used the warm water to freshen up.
Fu Wenjing then brought out another basin and poured water into it.
“You can soak your feet.”
In the countryside, people were not usually so particular. Even women would typically just rinse their hands and feet with cold water and be done with it.
The original owner had been the same way.
But Su Ruanruan was different—before transmigrating, she had actually developed a habit of soaking her feet at night. After hearing Fu Wenjing’s words now, she couldn’t help but mentally give him a point in his favor.
After soaking her feet, Su Ruanruan was about to dispose of the water herself when she saw Fu Wenjing sit down, remove his shoes and socks, and place his feet into the same basin.
Su Ruanruan hesitated.
“But… I already used that water…”
“It’s fine, it’s not dirty.” Fu Wenjing said casually.
His feet were pale, slender, and long.
Even his feet were good-looking—what kind of fairness was this?
After soaking his feet, Fu Wenjing picked up the basin and carried it outside to dispose of the water. He returned quickly, this time securing the door latch.
The room wasn’t large. A kang bed took up nearly half the space, with a small cabinet built into it. A round table sat beside the bed, and against the wall stood a simple washstand—other than that, there wasn’t much else.
On the round table, a kerosene lamp cast a dim yellow glow, illuminating the modest room.
Su Ruanruan took a quick glance around. When her eyes accidentally landed on Fu Wenjing’s face, she quickly averted them, her heartbeat quickening.
She watched as Fu Wenjing approached the table and prepared to blow out the lamp.
Without thinking, she blurted out, “Why are you blowing out the light?”
Fu Wenjing tilted his head slightly, his lips curving upward.
“You want to keep it on? That’s fine too.”
Su Ruanruan: “???”
That’s not what she meant!
In the end, the light was extinguished.
The window was covered with paper, and with the lamp on, their shadows would be clearly visible from the outside.
As if transmigrating straight into her wedding night wasn’t bad enough, Su Ruanruan definitely didn’t want it turning into a public spectacle.
There was no light pollution in this era, and once the lamp was out, the room was plunged into absolute darkness.
Even though they were sitting right next to each other on the kang, they couldn’t see each other’s outlines—only the sound of their breathing filled the space.
Su Ruanruan listened to the steady breaths drawing closer. Her heartbeat pounded like a drum, as if it would leap out of her throat at any moment.
It felt both like a fleeting moment and an eternity.
Fu Wenjing’s breath was suddenly right by her ear.
She could feel the warmth of his exhale ghosting against her skin, sending a tingling sensation down her spine.
“Don’t be afraid.”
His voice was soft, no longer carrying the cold detachment from before. Instead, it was huskier, laced with something deeper—something dangerously seductive.
Su Ruanruan instinctively swallowed.
So “a feast for the eyes” wasn’t just a phrase used for women—it worked for men too.
She didn’t know where she found the courage, but she forced herself to answer firmly, “I’m not afraid!”
The moment her words fell, Fu Wenjing let out a low chuckle.
His breathing grew just a little heavier.
