Chapter 33: Fu Wenjing Was Missed  

Because she was in a good mood, Su Ruanruan ate more than usual during lunch.  

She didn’t feel anything while sitting, but the moment she stood up, she realized she was quite full.  

Feeling so stuffed, there was no way she could take a nap.  

Su Ruanruan turned to look at Fu Wenjing. Just as she was about to speak, she heard Fu Wenjing say: “Wife, let’s go for a walk in the mountains.”  

Hearing his words, Su Ruanruan’s eyes instantly lit up.  

She hadn’t even said anything yet, and Fu Wenjing had already voiced her thoughts. Did this mean they had a deep connection?  

Neither of them had to work, so they had plenty of time to rest. Since they decided to go for a walk in the mountains, Wang Maoni didn’t stop them. She only reminded them to be careful.  

When they left the Fu family home, the village path was quiet.  

Afternoons in the summer were the hottest time of the day.  

Even the most playful children were kept indoors by their parents for an afternoon nap, making the outside world unusually peaceful.  

Su Ruanruan and Fu Wenjing chose to walk in shaded areas. Though they avoided direct sunlight, the air itself was still scorching. By the time they reached the foot of the mountain, fine beads of sweat had formed on their foreheads and noses.  

Inside the mountains, the trees provided shade, and the occasional mountain breeze made it much cooler than outside.  

Perhaps because of the heat, even the insects and birds seemed to be resting, leaving the mountain eerily quiet.  

Only the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves could be heard, creating a serene and beautiful atmosphere.  

Su Ruanruan took a deep breath, feeling refreshed and at ease.  

Despite the poverty and backwardness of this era, and the many inconveniences in daily life, it wasn’t without its advantages.  

The environment was pristine, the air was fresh, and the mountains were full of resources. A simple stroll in the mountains could yield plenty of rewards.  

She had a wonderful mother-in-law and a reasonable father-in-law.  

And, most importantly, a handsome, caring, and gentle husband.  

Just as this thought crossed her mind, she suddenly heard an electronic notification sound.  

Lately, Su Ruanruan had been hearing this sound frequently, so she knew it was the system notifying her of a completed transaction.  

But for it to ring at this exact moment… Was the system trying to remind her that it still existed?  

Although she knew it was probably just a coincidence, she didn’t pay much attention to it.  

Glancing at Fu Wenjing’s back, Su Ruanruan opened the system interface.  

The wild vegetables had already sold out, and just now, the last kilogram of kiwi fruit had also been purchased.  

Selling everything in just two days was quite a high success rate.

Since they entered the mountains early today, there was a chance they could find more wild vegetables and fruits.  

In just a few days, she and Fu Wenjing would be leaving this place. Wouldn’t it be much more inconvenient to come back and forage for wild vegetables then?  

With that thought, Su Ruanruan immediately closed the gold-mining system interface and jogged to catch up with Fu Wenjing ahead.  

“Wife, what’s wrong?” Fu Wenjing asked with a smile.  

“Where exactly do you serve as a soldier? What kind of place is it? Is it the same as here?”  

“I haven’t told you before?”  

Su Ruanruan firmly shook her head. “No, you haven’t!”  

“I’m stationed further north. It’s much colder there than here. Once winter arrives, heavy snow falls, and it doesn’t melt for the entire season. The snow can pile up higher than your knees.”  

“Even though it’s really cold, there are still fun things to do. Winter is great for hunting, and when I have time, I’ll get you all kinds of meat to eat.”  

Su Ruanruan let out a small huff. “Do I look like someone who’s always craving meat?”  

“No!” Fu Wenjing’s tone was firm. “My wife is definitely not someone who craves meat all the time.”  

Only then did Su Ruanruan nod in satisfaction. “Exactly! I’m not greedy for meat at all! But if it’s that cold, how do you train in winter?”  

Snow deeper than the knees—wouldn’t even walking be difficult?  

As she was thinking about it, Fu Wenjing responded seriously: “Shoveling snow is also a form of training. It helps build endurance.”  

Su Ruanruan: “???”  

She realized she had been too inexperienced!  

Before traveling to this era, Su Ruanruan had lived in a place that was neither too far north nor too far south. She had never even seen a heated kang bed.  

Although winters in her previous life were also cold, with temperatures dropping several degrees below zero, it rarely snowed.  

She had never seen the kind of snow Fu Wenjing described—so deep it reached past the knees. The thought of it actually made her a little excited.  

“What about the place you live in?” Su Ruanruan asked again.  

“We’re assigned housing. All the military families live together in a big courtyard, where every household has a small private yard. The house I was assigned has three rooms in the main building. The center room serves as the dining area and kitchen, with a stove inside.”  

“In winter, cooking also heats up the kang bed, keeping the house warm. In summer, we just block off the chimney flue, and it’s fine.”  

A private courtyard!  

Su Ruanruan nodded in satisfaction.

She had been worried that they might have to live in a tube-shaped apartment building, which would mean absolutely no privacy. In those places, even the kitchen was shared, making it difficult to cook anything extra for themselves.  

Now that she knew they would have a private courtyard with a kitchen inside the house, Su Ruanruan felt completely relieved.  

“How big is our courtyard? Did you plant any vegetables?”  

“It’s about sixty to seventy square meters. I didn’t plant anything. I only go home to sleep, and I eat at the canteen every day. Even if I planted something, I wouldn’t have time to take care of it.”  

“It’s fine. Once we get there, we’ll clear out a patch and plant some radishes and cabbage. Those are hardy crops.”  

“Alright, we’ll do whatever my wife says. Once we get back, I’ll turn over the soil.”  

“Can we raise chickens?”  

“Yes. Since it’s just the two of us, we’re allowed to raise two chickens.”  

“Then let’s raise two. I wonder if baby chicks are easy to buy at this time of year.”  

“I’ll ask the sisters-in-law in the compound to help inquire. We’ll definitely be able to find some.”  

As they walked, they continued discussing all the things they needed to do after arriving at the military unit, planning out everything in detail.  

The more Su Ruanruan spoke, the happier she became. The smile on her face never faded.  

This was what it meant to look forward to the future!  

Just as they were about to continue forward, Fu Wenjing suddenly stopped and reached out to grab her arm.  

Su Ruanruan looked at him in confusion, only to see him shake his head slightly, his expression turning serious.  

Although she didn’t know what was going on, she pressed her lips together and stayed silent, even slowing down her breathing.  

Now that they were both quiet, the sounds around them became much clearer.  

Not far away, someone was speaking.  

It was a woman’s voice, low and tinged with a sobbing tone.  

Su Ruanruan carefully searched the original owner’s memories but couldn’t match this voice to anyone she knew. It didn’t seem to be someone familiar.  

“In this scorching heat, we still have to go work in the fields. My hands are covered in blisters, and the skin on my neck is peeling from the sun.”  

“Why is it that we educated youths have to work ourselves to death in the fields, while Su Ruanruan gets to skip labor just because she got married?”  

Hearing her own name, Su Ruanruan instinctively raised an eyebrow.

From the girl’s words just now, it was clear that she was one of the educated youths in the production team.  

The educated youths all lived in their own courtyard and usually worked separately from the villagers. The original owner of this body had never interacted with them before—not even exchanged a single word.  

Yet now, someone who was supposed to be a stranger was talking about her by name. Su Ruanruan found this quite odd.  

At that moment, another female voice joined in.  

“Well, she just married well. She married the son of the brigade leader, and not only is he a soldier, but he’s also an officer. I heard that in a few days, she’ll be leaving with him to join the military unit.”  

“Once she gets there, she won’t have to do farm work at all. She’ll just eat and drink every day, using her allowance to buy food, drinks, and clothes. Who knows how good her life will be?”  

“Sigh, she grew up in this village and only graduated from middle school. How did she get so lucky to marry a soldier?”  

“If you ask me, she’s not even as pretty as you. Her family conditions aren’t as good as yours, and she’s not as educated as you. Why did such a good thing fall into her lap?”  

“Lili, if only you were the one who married Fu Wenjing. Then you wouldn’t have to suffer in the production team.”  

“What’s the point of saying this now? She’s already leaving with him.”  

“But what if she doesn’t get to go?”  

“What do you mean?”  

“If she disgraces the Fu family and Fu Wenjing divorces her, wouldn’t he have to marry someone else? Lili, you’d have the best chance then. Among all the educated youths, you’re the prettiest. Even in the entire production team, no girl is better than you.”  

“But wouldn’t that make me his second wife?”  

“So what? Fu Wenjing isn’t bad-looking, and he seems to treat Su Ruanruan quite well. He knows how to care for his wife, and he’d take you to the military unit with him. You’d get to spend his allowance however you want.”  

“Besides, if he’s been divorced before, he definitely wouldn’t try to control you too much. In the end, wouldn’t you have the final say in everything?”  

Hearing this conversation, Su Ruanruan didn’t know what Lili was thinking, but she herself was already amused.  

What a well-calculated plan!  

She had only come to the mountains for a walk, hoping to gather some wild vegetables and fruits to make some money on the side.  

She hadn’t expected to earn a single cent yet, but she had already overheard someone coveting her man.  

Su Ruanruan turned to look at Fu Wenjing, curious about his reaction.  

As soon as she glanced over, she saw that Fu Wenjing’s face was dark, his entire body exuding a cold, oppressive aura.
