Chapter 34: You Have Nothing to Lose, So Why Not Be More Generous?

The two people on the other side were still talking, and their words were becoming increasingly bold. They were even plotting how to turn Su Ruanruan into an abandoned wife.

Su Ruanruan was actually quite curious. She tilted her head, trying to listen more carefully.

But at that moment, Fu Wenjing, who had been silent all along, suddenly kicked a tree beside her.

It was just a small tree, with a trunk no thicker than Fu Wenjing’s arm.

With a single kick, Fu Wenjing broke the tree in half, producing a sharp crack.

In the quiet mountain forest of the afternoon, the sudden loud noise startled many birds resting in the trees. They flapped their wings in a flurry and flew away.

The two people who had been talking were also shocked by the unexpected sound. They stopped their conversation immediately and hurried in this direction.

Within moments, two figures entered Su Ruanruan’s field of vision.

There were more than a dozen educated youths in the Hongqi Production Team. The original owner of Su Ruanruan’s body had not been close to them, but she had seen them before and knew their names.

After inheriting all of the original owner’s memories, Su Ruanruan could now match names with faces.

The two young women were both around 1.6 meters tall.

The slimmer and fairer one was Xu Li. She had two long braids and was dressed in a Dacron shirt with black pants.

The one beside her, with short hair cut to ear-length, was Xue Hong. Her cheeks were plump and round.

They both looked about eighteen or nineteen years old. Though not exceptionally beautiful, their faces were full of youthful collagen, glowing with energy.

And because they were from the city and had graduated from high school, it was clear at a glance that they had just stepped out of the classroom into the real world.

When these two girls walked together, they naturally attracted attention.

Who would have thought that these very girls were secretly scheming against someone, plotting to steal another woman’s husband?

They clearly had not expected to be caught red-handed. After the initial shock, their faces turned bright red, and their eyes flickered evasively.

“I… You… Don’t misunderstand, we were just talking nonsense.” Xue Hong, the short-haired girl, was the first to speak.

When Su Ruanruan looked at Xu Li, Xu Li also looked back at her.

The two pairs of eyes met, and Xu Li suddenly lifted her chin. “You’re just a middle school graduate, a village girl who doesn’t deserve Fu Wenjing at all. If you follow him to the Military Unit, you’ll only make him a laughingstock. If you have any self-awareness, you should divorce Fu Wenjing immediately and let me have him.  

“I, on the other hand, am a high school graduate, and my family background is far from ordinary. If he marries me, his future in the Military Unit will be smooth sailing.”  

As she finished speaking, Xu Li shifted her gaze to Fu Wenjing.  

Her eyes sparkled, and the corners of her mouth lifted high, as if she was certain—certain that Fu Wenjing would choose her.  

“So? Will you divorce her and marry me? As long as you treat me well, I won’t mind that you’ve been married before.”  

Her words were filled with condescension, as if she were bestowing a great favor upon him.  

Fu Wenjing merely looked at her coldly. “I’ve remembered every word you just said—”  

Xu Li’s eyes brightened.  

“When we go down the mountain, I will write down everything you said and send it to the Educated Youth Office. Since you’re a high school graduate, an intellectual, you should know that sabotaging a military marriage is illegal.  

“Someone as capable as you shouldn’t have to suffer here in the Hongqi Production Team. But don’t worry, I’m sure there will be a suitable farm for you, where you can shine and contribute.”  

As Fu Wenjing spoke, the smile on Xu Li’s face first stiffened, then gradually faded.  

“You…”  

She wanted to say something, but after opening her mouth, no words came out. Panic filled her face.  

Beside her, Xue Hong was also terrified. She swallowed hard before forcing herself to speak. “Uh, Comrade Fu, you misunderstood. Lili didn’t mean it that way. She never intended to destroy a military marriage. It’s just that you’re so outstanding, so… But don’t worry, I will definitely talk to her and make sure she doesn’t do anything foolish. Can’t you be more magnanimous and just let this go?”  

Fu Wenjing turned his head slightly and looked at Xue Hong. “You encouraged her to sabotage a military marriage and tried to harm my wife. Someone as capable as you is also quite the talent. Don’t worry, I won’t forget about you. When the time comes, you two can go to the same farm and help each other out.”  

Xue Hong’s face was filled with shock. This time, she was completely speechless.  

She had wanted to persuade Fu Wenjing, but she never expected that she had just talked herself into trouble as well.  

“Comrade Fu, you… you can’t do this! We were just casually talking. We didn’t actually do anything. Is talking a crime now?” Xue Hong argued.

Before Fu Wenjing could respond, Xue Hong quickly turned to Su Ruanruan. “Su Ruanruan, say something! We’re all women—you know how difficult life is for us. Are you really going to watch your husband make things so hard for us?  

“We were just talking casually; we haven’t actually done anything. Look, you’re perfectly fine, aren’t you? How can just a few words be enough to send us to a farm?  

“If we end up suffering, what good does it do for you?”  

Hearing Xue Hong’s words, Su Ruanruan was completely stunned.  

These two had been plotting against her, trying to steal her husband, and now they were blaming her for not pleading on their behalf? What kind of twisted logic was this?  

“Honghong, why are you begging her? Does she even deserve that?” Xu Li sneered. “If it weren’t for her, would Fu Wenjing be treating me like this?  

“Fu Wenjing, even if you send me to a farm, I still have to say this—Su Ruanruan doesn’t deserve you at all! She’s nothing but trouble. Her family can’t help you in any way; they’ll only drag you down. Choosing her over me? You’re bound to regret it sooner or later.”  

“I will never regret it.” Fu Wenjing replied, his voice firm and unwavering. “Our affairs are none of your concern. You should start worrying about yourself instead.”  

With that, he reached for Su Ruanruan’s hand and turned decisively, leading her down the mountain.  

They had only taken a few steps when suddenly, the sound of heavy footsteps came from behind them—someone was running toward them at full speed.  

Su Ruanruan’s instincts kicked in. She immediately pulled Fu Wenjing to the side, dodging whatever was coming.  

At that exact moment, Xu Li lifted her foot.  

She had meant to kick Su Ruanruan, but because Su Ruanruan had moved away, her foot struck nothing but air.  

Thrown off balance by the force of her own kick, Xu Li lurched forward uncontrollably.  

The path was on a mountainside, sloping downward. As soon as she lost her footing, she tumbled down the incline, letting out a sharp, piercing scream.  

Fortunately, the slope wasn’t too steep. After rolling for several seconds, Xu Li finally came to a stop.  

She lay there, her chest rising and falling slightly.

Perhaps it was because she had screamed too loudly earlier, but now Xu Li was no longer yelling. Instead, she had started crying.  

Xue Hong stood frozen in place for a long moment before she finally stumbled forward, rushing to Xu Li’s side.  

“Lili, don’t scare me! Are you okay?”  

She grabbed Xu Li’s shoulders and shook her anxiously, her eyes red-rimmed, tears welling up.  

Turning her tearful gaze to Su Ruanruan and Fu Wenjing, she pleaded: “Look at her! She fell down the slope. Even if she was wrong before, she’s already been punished for it. Can’t you just let this go?  

“I promise I’ll keep an eye on her. Besides, you two are leaving in just a few days. You won’t even see her again. Just spare her this time, okay?”  

Hearing Xue Hong’s words, Su Ruanruan couldn’t hold back her laughter. “You’re really something else. Is it because your brain works differently from everyone else’s? Otherwise, why do you keep twisting the truth like this?  

“Why did Xu Li fall down the slope? Wasn’t it because she tried to kick me from behind?”  

“But… but you’re fine, aren’t you? She didn’t actually kick you, and she’s the one who got hurt instead. You’re not even injured—why can’t you be a little more generous?”  

Su Ruanruan had originally intended to argue with Xue Hong and make her see reason. But after hearing this ridiculous response, she gave up on the idea entirely.  

Xue Hong’s way of thinking was completely flawed. There was no reasoning with her.  

Su Ruanruan turned to Fu Wenjing. “Shall we go?”  

“Mm, let’s go. I’ll take care of this matter, don’t worry.”  

Su Ruanruan smiled at him. “Of course, I trust you.”  

As they talked, they walked away, not sparing another glance at Xue Hong and Xu Li.  

Though Xu Li had rolled down the slope several times, she wasn’t actually badly hurt. She hadn’t even lost consciousness—she was just pretending, hoping to gain sympathy.  

But pretending to be unconscious wouldn’t solve her problems.  

Fu Wenjing and Su Ruanruan returned to the Fu Family home, where the family members had just gotten up and were preparing to leave for work.  

Without hesitation, Fu Wenjing went straight to find Fu Chunshan and told him everything that had just happened.  

The more Fu Chunshan listened, the darker his expression became. Finally, he slammed his hand heavily on the kang table.  

“This is absolutely outrageous!”
