Chapter 169
In the original owner’s memory, the experience of being brought back to the country was exceptionally profound because it was the most dangerous experience of her life.
Being chased, intercepted, and having documents confiscated were nothing compared to the chilling manner in which the opposition would destroy without hesitation.
They relentlessly pursued, not even deploying their own country’s soldiers initially, but hiring mercenaries first and pushing responsibilities onto others later.
It could be said that the journey to bring the scientist back to the country was arduous. Perhaps because of these memories, Shi Tingyu seemed even more uneasy.
When the original owner’s family was brought back to the country, it took over half a month.
Such missions were actually more challenging than some destructive tasks because they had to ensure the experts’ safety, often feeling constrained and sometimes the soldiers even risked their lives.
Counting the days, Shi Tingyu had never felt time was so unbearable.
It wasn’t until two weeks had passed that Shi Tingyu truly felt as though each day was dragging on.
Before Lu Weiguo left for his mission, Shi Tingyu had prepared some spiritual spring water for him to take along.
But Lu Weiguo refused, his eyes at the time full of disapproval.
Under his gaze, she had the mistaken impression that he knew what it was.
Lu Weiguo only said that everything was prepared by the camp and that he couldn’t bring anything privately.
Shi Tingyu didn’t know if what he said was true or false, or if that was his reason for refusing the spiritual spring water.
Now, she regretted not insisting he take it with him back then. If he had, she would have worried a little less.
Time passed in Shi Tingyu’s daily anxieties.
It wasn’t until May 20th that Shi Tingyu received news about Lu Weiguo.
The young soldier who brought the news looked at Shi Tingyu cautiously.
Pale-faced, Shi Tingyu asked calmly, “Your captain, is he… still alive?”
The young soldier was momentarily stunned but quickly responded, waving his hands, “Sister-in-law, our captain is doing fine, just… just a bit injured, he’s in the hospital now.”
Shi Tingyu let out a sigh of relief suddenly. As long as he was alive, with the spiritual spring water, she could surely save him.
“The leader sent me to notify the family to come and take care of him, and to help you bring some things.”
Shi Tingyu nodded after hearing this, and asked, “Is his injury serious?”
“The captain’s injuries are in the chest and arm.” The young soldier was afraid his words weren’t clear enough and added, “Not life-threatening.”
Relieved, Shi Tingyu set her mind at ease and asked the young soldier to wait a moment while she quickly packed up Lu Weiguo’s usual toiletries, clothes, and other necessary items. She would buy anything else needed.
After thinking for a moment, she took out some cherries, loquats, and strawberries from her space. These fruits were in season now, so taking them out wouldn’t arouse suspicion.
Eating produce from her space would aid in his recovery.
Seeing Shi Tingyu holding these items, the young soldier hurried over to help carry them.
Lijian saw Shi Tingyu come out with the package and immediately followed.
Shi Tingyu patted Lijian’s head and finally took him to Mrs. Zhang’s next door with his food bowl.
Mrs. Zhang looked surprised when she saw Shi Tingyu, “Sister, what’s wrong?”
Shi Tingyu said, “Sister Zhang, Weiguo was injured on his mission and is in the hospital. I’m going to take care of him. Could you take care of Lijian for a few days?”
Mrs. Zhang took Lijian’s leash and promised, “Sister, don’t worry, I’ll take good care of Lijian. You go and see your Captain Lu.”
Shi Tingyu thanked her and hurriedly followed the young soldier.
At this time, Damao came out of the house and his eyes lit up when he saw Lijian.
Mrs. Zhang sent the child away and was a little worried.
Thinking of Shi Tingyu’s hurried departure, Mrs. Zhang estimated she hadn’t even had time to ask Principal Ren for leave, so she quickly informed Principal Ren.
Principal Ren understood and asked Han Wei to handle the art class more during these days.
Lijian looked a bit wilted, understanding Shi Tingyu’s words but feeling very worried about his master. However, he didn’t want to cause trouble for his master, so he behaved very well at Mrs. Zhang’s house.
Mrs. Zhang couldn’t help but comment, “Lijian is so sensible.”
Meanwhile, the young soldier drove Shi Tingyu to the military hospital.
Lu Weiguo was on the second floor of the hospital ward. Shi Tingyu hurriedly ran upstairs, with the young soldier following behind with the package.
When they reached the door of the ward, Shi Tingyu heard voices from inside.
A young girl’s voice, tinged with tears, was apologizing, “I’m sorry, it’s all my fault! I really didn’t mean to, I was just scared at the time.”
Shi Tingyu frowned. Could Lu Weiguo’s injury be related to this young girl?
Without allowing herself to think further, her worries overwhelmed her. She pushed open the door to the ward.
Lu Weiguo’s tense expression relaxed momentarily when he saw Shi Tingyu, then his eyes filled with guilt and worry.
“Wife,” Lu Weiguo called out.
Everyone turned to look, seeing a cold beauty entering.
When Shi Tingyu wasn’t smiling, her demeanor was cold, like frost and snow in winter, quite intimidating.
Shi Tingyu didn’t look at anyone else, her gaze fixed on Lu Weiguo.
He was lying half-reclined in bed, his arm in a sling. She couldn’t see the wound on his chest because it was covered by his clothes.
The young soldier also entered at this time, helping to arrange things and then staying inside.
In addition to Lu Weiguo, there were three other people in the ward.
Two of them were a middle-aged couple in their fifties, who seemed to be husband and wife. The third person was the young girl who had been crying at the door, as Shi Tingyu had heard.
The middle-aged man in his fifties bowed deeply to Shi Tingyu, “I’m sorry, this time Captain Lu was injured because of us, I’m really sorry.”
Seeing her father like this, the young girl couldn’t help but burst into tears, rushing to support her father, sobbing, “Dad, it’s all my fault.”
Shi Tingyu ignored them, turning to sit by Lu Weiguo’s bed. Carefully, she lifted his clothes to see the bandages wrapped around his chest.
The bandages still had traces of red blood seeping through.
Lu Weiguo used his uninjured left hand to gently stop Shi Tingyu from inspecting the wound, reassuring her, “I’m fine, don’t worry.”
Shi Tingyu bit her lip, not saying anything. With him in this state, how could he still say he was fine?
She didn’t want Lu Weiguo to worry about her emotions while he was injured. She forced a smile, gently holding his hand as if to comfort him.
Looking at Professor Chen who was still standing there, Lu Weiguo spoke up, “Professor Chen, there’s no need for this, it was just an accident.”
Professor Chen straightened up, his eyes filled with guilt that had lingered for a long time.
Shi Tingyu looked at Lu Weiguo and asked, “What exactly happened to your injury?”
Before Lu Weiguo could respond, the tearful young girl spoke first.
“I’m sorry, it’s my fault. I-I was scared and didn’t follow orders, which delayed us. Captain Lu got injured trying to save me.”
Shi Tingyu only grasped part of what was said, but she didn’t press for more details.
She respected the elderly professor who had given up everything to return to the country.
At his age, Professor Chen was still bowing and apologizing to her. Without knowing the details of the situation, she naturally had no reason to forgive or not forgive anyone.
