So for 18 dollars for the premium content, we’re getting a broken sense of immersion, casual slang in a historical drama, flattened charcater voice, and the audacity of someone telling my tragic general to “chill” mid-dialogue?
Be so for real. 18 dollars.
I really wjated to enjoy this novel—the plot is fun, and at first, it was charming, especially because of the main couple. But somewhere around Chapter 32 (maybe even earlier), the translation takes a SHARP turn in tone and structure. What had been a relatively grounded, immersive read gets hit with a slang-heavy, modern “updo”. And it doesn’t stop.
If you don’t mind your exiled princes and disgraced general sounding like they’ve just stepped out of a group chat, maybe you’ll still enjoy the novel. But the narrative voice is so annoying haha. I thought it was a one-off quirk, a stylistic choice for one sttaightforward, no-nonsense character. But, unfortunately, the tone shift spreads to the entire cast, until it starts feeling like the translator ran the MTL into an AI to make the story “palatable.” It is so exhausting.
I even left a comment earlier just saying “the translation is really corny lol,” becahse that’s exactly how it reads. And now that I’ve read morw of the premiun chapters, I have to say: I regret paying for this. The casual, slangy tone strips the story of it’s depth. It turns what should’ve been a layered historical-political setting into something that feels shallow and out of place. The characters are hard to connect with—not because of who they are, but becahse the voice they’re forced to speak with is so dissonant. They all sound the same. Every one of them. All the uniqueness they got? Ruined for an extra “chill” thrown somewhere in their internal monologue or EVEN IN THEIR DIALOGUE. They’re just annoying.
Normally, I’d ket something like this slide, but calling this “premium content” while offering a translatiom that flattens the atmosphere and undercuts the original tone feels disengenuous. Maybe this is just how the translator works, and I’m unfamiliar with their style—whatever it is, it doesn’t work here.
I LIKW HISTORICAL SETTINGS. AND I LIKE IT EVEN MORE WHEN CHARACTERS DO HISTORICAL THINGS—EVEN SOMETHING AS SMALL AS SPEAK LIKE IT.
Let the story breathe in it’s own time period please!!!
Anyway, if you find you can slog through it, go ahead. It’a not illegal to like subpar translations. Even I want to finish this story because I spent MONEY getting invested in Jiang Huai to let his cool internet speak ruin this for me.
