Chapter 101: A Battle of Wits and Strength
This was the loophole in the world’s laws.
The Chaos World couldn’t transcend time and space to verify anything Raine had done on Earth. It could only rigidly confirm whether he had done something or not, without being able to distinguish whether he’d done it in reality or just in a game.
Imagine the shock this kind of rule-bending bug ultimately caused that poor lich on the other side.
Unwilling to give up, Brutus, seething inwardly as he cursed Raine’s entire family, secretly cast the spell “Insight into Legends” once again.
This time, he asked about the various legends surrounding Raine’s methods for dealing with liches.
And once again, a title acknowledged by the Chaos World’s rules quickly surfaced in the shallow layers of Brutus’s mind.
“Lich’s Bane!”
Just these four simple words left Brutus utterly terrified.
Could an ordinary being even achieve a title like that?
The title “Bane of XX” signifies someone dedicated to opposing a particular kind of entity. Opposing them doesn’t necessarily mean they always win; generally, you’d need to completely defeat that entity type at least ten times for the world to grant you this title.
The title “Bane” is even more extreme—it requires having defeated the enemy over thirty times, utterly obliterating them from both the physical and spiritual realms in a humiliating fashion.
“Lich’s Bane” indicated that this lunatic named Tesla had wiped out at least three dozen high-level liches, some of whom were demigod liches so powerful that even gods avoided crossing them.
How could there possibly be such a powerful mage in this world? Could all the legends about Tesla be true?
Brutus was in full panic mode.
Ironically, after Raine expanded his perception, he sensed Brutus’s panic through his soul fluctuations, yet he couldn’t comprehend why this guy was suddenly so afraid.
Thus, with one party in panic and the other confidently posturing from his fortified lair in the Fulong Mountains, the result on the main battlefield appeared to be a standoff, filled with tension but eerily quiet.
Although Brutus was blocked by the newly arrived Grand Mage Tesla on the main battlefield, that didn’t mean the other three directions around the city were safe.
Without receiving new orders from their undead lord, the wights in the other three directions continued to drive the undead against the city walls.
At that moment, a short figure clad in mage robes appeared.
“Everyone step back! I’m about to cast a spell.”
“Huh? A spell?”
Harry shouted, “In the name of Mendeleev, I declare, all elements heed my command—”
Ahem!
Ever since learning from his master that Mendeleev was the one who formulated the periodic table, Harry had taken to revering Mendeleev as the “Father of Elements.”
And well… maybe it wasn’t entirely wrong!
Recently, whenever he cast any magic involving large quantities of elements, even defensive spells, he invoked Mendeleev’s name like this.
Before anyone could react, the ground opposite the moat, which had been filled with bones, began to tremble violently. A relatively narrow earthen wall, as high as the city walls, shot up from the ground.
The long wall temporarily split the undead charging forward from those already atop the city walls.
Next, a fierce blaze erupted in the moat, now filled with muddy, corpse-laden water.
Countless fire elements materialized, flowing along the original riverbed. Intense flames shot up from below, easily reducing the skeletons to charred remains and roasting the zombies until they were crisp.
This scene left countless people stunned.
An adventurer gasped, “Wait! Could he be Harry Winston, the second apprentice chosen by the Grand Mage on November 11th? In just a month, he’s already become a high-level mage?”
Indeed, Harry was a high-level mage, but with access to the fully unlocked “Physics Web” and using “Modular Spellcasting,” he achieved results equal to those of an entire high-level mage squad on his own.
First, he secured the western wall, then moved to the southern wall, where the sections of flaming river gave the soldiers battling in the dark a surge of courage.
Humanity’s instinctive yearning for light stirred the last reserves of strength within them.
“Yes! Follow Master Winston! Charge!” Though elite guards already protected Harry, more city guards instinctively gathered around him, forming an outer ring with their battered shields.
In a battle of this scale, a mage capable of large-scale destruction was undoubtedly the focus of the group’s protection.
As long as the mage held, so did the wall.
If Harry’s performance was impressive, Downes’ was even more outlandish.
He had little interest in the undead fodder; with just a few “Chain Lightning” spells, he cleared the skeletons and zombies within a 30-meter radius. Then, he began targeting the wights and death knights one by one.
Purple streaks of light continuously shot from his hands. Every time he fired an “Electromagnetic Cannon,” a wight or death knight’s body was pierced through, their souls utterly obliterated by the energy.
Compared to Harry’s seemingly overwhelming barrage, Downes’ attacks were far deadlier for the undead army, delivering lethal precision strikes.
Without the mid-level commanders—the wights and death knights—the mindless skeletons, zombies, and even the skeleton warriors once trained as regular soldiers lost their order.
They instinctively surged toward the walls, but their movements were chaotic; they even started shoving each other aside or hacking through their own ranks.
This dramatically eased the pressure on the defending soldiers.
“It seems Marino City won’t fall, at least for now,” Sophia remarked with deep relief.
“Yes, but everything still depends on that master,” Joseph added.
With a brief lull, they found a moment to observe the strange standoff in the north of the city.
Over there, Raine’s level synchronized with his highest-level apprentice. The system’s evaluation of Brutus showed “???” but lacked the unassailable skull icon, indicating he was likely a grandmaster level, maybe within five levels of Raine.
Raine mused: Surely a mighty lich like him can’t be an idiot? Watching his minions get taken down by my apprentices without reacting… He must have plenty of hidden cards! I’d better wait and see. After all, my attack options are limited. It’s nighttime, so the magnifying lens won’t work. If the Tesla Tower and “Electromagnetic Cannon” can’t take this guy down, I don’t have many strong offensive options left.
Little did he know, Brutus’s soul was trembling. This lunatic is a “Lich’s Bane”! My nemesis! Damn it! Doesn’t that mean he can counter every necromancy spell I know? Have the last hundred years of my necromancy research been a complete waste?!
Of course, liches don’t solely rely on necromancy, but without it, is he still a lich? That would make him the eunuch of the lich world, the laughingstock of every lich on earth!
