Chapter 23: 007
52.
Wei Nanlin was cooking in the kitchen, and I was playing with the little dog in the living room.
The tiny creature was three months old, recently weaned, with soft fur that felt incredibly nice. It had a lingering milk smell, and its eyes sparkled like glass beads. It hadn’t grown teeth yet, and it loved nibbling on my fingers.
Wei Nanlin said the mother dog had given birth to three in this litter. She had plenty of milk, so he chose the roundest and plumpest one when he went to pick it up.
I recorded a short video of it and sent it to the family’s WeChat group.
【Chu Qi: Isn’t it adorable?!】
【Dad: Where did you find the little dog?】
【Chu Qi: Dr. Wei bought it.】
【Dad: Giving you two another son?】
【Chu Qi: You can think of it that way. From today on, it’s your grandson.】
【Mother: It looks so small, is it still nursing? Which one of you is going to feed the puppy?】
【Chu Qi: It’s weaned!!!】
What kind of weird questions are these?
Talking about this, I suddenly realized that there didn’t seem to be anything for a young puppy to eat at home. Wei Nanlin usually doesn’t allow me to eat snacks, so we don’t even have sausages at home.
“Brother, let’s go to the pet store later and get it some food.”
“I already did that a few days ago. The items arrived this afternoon, they’re all in the trunk of my car. There’s food and everything it needs. If we find anything missing, we can go shopping again.” Wei Nanlin said.
“You’re so considerate!” I put down the puppy and rushed out the door.
Perhaps due to his profession, Wei Nanlin was usually patient and meticulous in what he did.
In the trunk, there were a dog bed, a leash, puppy canned food, doggy shampoo, a dog toilet, a dog tag, food and water bowls, and all sorts of toys and treats.
The little creature wasn’t shy at all. After I held and petted it a couple of times, it started running around my feet in a frenzy. Sometimes, it would just suddenly flop to the ground while walking, a cuteness overload.
After dinner came a brief period of rest. The Corgi was lying on my lap, and I was lying on Wei Nanlin’s lap, watching “Today’s Legal Report.”
“Brother, what should we name it?”
“Chu Xiaoba?”
I glared at him, “Why not call it Wei Xiaolin?”
“It looks more like you.” Wei Nanlin smiled, “Or should we call it Lin Qi? It’s a combination of our names.”
“Lin Qi…” I rubbed the puppy’s head, “Or maybe call it 007.”
53.
Since the arrival of 007, my leisure time became much more fulfilling. Not that it wasn’t fulfilling before, but that kind of fulfillment took a lot of energy, and I couldn’t sustain it.
Reading, exercising, learning various professional knowledge every day—only someone as rigorous and disciplined as Dr. Wei could handle it.
In this world, most people are probably like me, a lazy person.
Longing for a more carefree life, eating, watching movies, and casually walking a dog when there’s nothing to do.
After work, shouldn’t life be this enjoyable? Otherwise, what’s the point of earning money?
Sometimes I envy 007. Eating, sleeping, running, and jumping—it has no worries. In just half a month, it gained five pounds.
The subsequent routine changed a bit.
Wei Nanlin would wake up early to read while I woke up early to feed and clean up after the dog. Wei Nanlin would read and write at night while I took the dog out for a walk. On holidays, I would bring the dog back home to eat with my parents.
During this time, 007 slept in our room.
Wei Nanlin didn’t agree with letting it on the bed, but when he wasn’t around, who could stop us!
I often held 007 and watched horror movies.
At first, it was quite harmonious, but it didn’t take long for someone to have objections.
“It’s been a while since you’ve talked to me.”
“Haven’t I? I’m talking to you now.” I squatted on the floor and gave 007 some water.
“Not like this,” Wei Nanlin said, “You used to watch movies with me. Have you noticed you haven’t sat on the couch and watched something with me for a long time?”
I looked up, “Aren’t you busy? You have to write a lot.”
“Then why don’t you stay at home and keep me company on weekends? After getting the dog, you hardly pay attention to me.” Wei Nanlin said.
“Ah…” I burst into laughter, “Are you feeling jealous of the dog?”
Wei Nanlin gave the puppy a cool glance, “No walking the dog tonight, stay at home and watch TV with me.”
“Sure.”
007 happily bounded into my arms, and I couldn’t help but give it a kiss on the head. The little thing stuck out its tongue and left a face full of slobber on me.
Wei Nanlin tugged my collar back, “No more kissing.”
“It’s quite clean, I just gave it a bath yesterday.”
“And after it’s done pooping, it doesn’t know to clean itself. Its tongue might have just licked its butt, and you’re still kissing it, then you come to kiss me.”
“Tch, I won’t kiss you then.”
Wei Nanlin widened his eyes, “I’ll give you one more chance. Is kissing me more important or kissing it more important?”
