Saving Cannon Fodders with the Villain Chapter 20

Farm Spring Break 12

The voice only lasted for a moment before it stopped.

But it didn’t make Zheng Wei and the others feel at ease. On the contrary, they became more anxious. Especially, Zheng Wei, his heart sank to the bottom.

Could something have happened to Diane and Martin? He couldn’t help but think of the worst outcome.

But the system did not notify him of the mission failure, which gave Zheng Wei a glimmer of hope. While running, he pulled out the assembly whistle hanging around his chest and blew it with force. The sharp whistle sound echoed throughout the forest.

The act of blowing the whistle made Allen and Ellie, who were running in front, couldn’t help but look back at Zheng Wei, but they didn’t say anything.

If it were usual, they would surely ask Zheng Wei what he was doing, but they had no time to spare. Their entire attention was focused on Diane and the others, who they didn’t know what had happened to.

The three soon found the place where Martin practiced shooting, but there was no one there. Only a bag of guns and a tattered pillow that had been beaten up remained.

“This is Martin’s backpack.” Allen picked up the bag containing the guns from the ground and stood up to survey the surroundings. “They must have been practicing shooting here.”

“Then where did they go?” Ellie’s face showed a hint of panic. “That was Diane’s voice just now, right? What happened to her? Could there be danger?”

Zheng Wei stood on the side without saying a word. He looked around this place, trying to find some clues that could help him find Diane and the others.

He saw a black water stain not far away on the ground. He walked up to the stain and found something unusual. He squatted down and touched it with his hand, feeling sticky, with a sweet and fishy smell.

It wasn’t a water stain, it was a puddle of blood.

The red blood lost its color under the moonlight, so it looked like a water stain.

“Oh my god, is this…is this blood?” Ellie asked in disbelief as she caught up, her voice trembling. “Is this from Diane and the others? Are they hurt?”

“Ellie, don’t worry,” Allen comforted her, hugging the nearly tearful Ellie. “It might just be animal blood.”

Although he said so, the furrowed eyebrows revealed his true thoughts.

Martin, Diane, and Jin were likely in danger.

Zheng Wei, who knew the existence of the evil spirit was even less optimistic. He looked at the bloodstains and his mind raced.

Based on the scream just now and what was left behind, they should have encountered the evil spirit. The system did not judge the mission as a failure, which meant that Martin and the others were not in mortal danger.

Now they just needed to wait for the assembly whistle to bring them back. Zheng Wei comforted himself, but this did not reduce his inner worries.

There were too many things that could happen within 20 minutes, and Zheng Wei was not sure if they could hold on for the next 20 minutes. Even if they did, could he kill the evil spirit?

Zheng Wei remembered the ending of the previous world and thought of the medical staff at St. Philip Hospital who were in an unknown situation now. For a moment, he felt a kind of hatred for himself.

I am too incompetent. Zheng Wei kept a tense face. If only I were a little more powerful.

“Let’s see where the bloodstains are pointing,” Zheng Wei said hoarsely, suppressing the surging emotions in his heart. “Let’s follow the bloodstains.”

The three of them searched carefully with their flashlights, looking for any possible bloodstains.

“What is this?” Ellie didn’t find any bloodstains, but she found several suspicious black substances on the ground next to the bloodstain.

“It looks like mud,” Allen crouched down, looked for a while, touched it, and disgustedly wiped his hands with tissue, before saying, “This is swamp mud, only swamp mud has this rotten smell.”

Zheng Wei stood on the side, sweeping his flashlight back and forth, and found that those mud prints were in rows, extending from the bushes over there to deep into the forest.

“Look, don’t these look like footprints?” He frowned and said.

The mud on the ground looked like the shape of footprints upon closer inspection. The footprints were of different depths and shapes, suggesting that one foot was wearing shoes while the other was bare.

The footprints were large, indicating that they belonged to an adult male.

It was unclear whether the footprints belonged to Martin or Jin, or to a stranger they did not know. However, they did not have time to investigate further.

“Regardless, let’s follow them and see where they lead,” Allen said, picking up the bag with the guns inside. He took out a hunting rifle, checked the bullets, and then put the rest on his back.

“You guys follow behind me.” He held the gun and said to Zheng Wei and Ellie, with a serious expression.

Although Allen did not know what was happening, he sensed that the forest was not safe.

Thus, Allen led the way holding the gun, with Ellie in the middle, and Zheng Wei following behind. They walked towards the depths of the forest in the direction of the footprints.

They had not gone far when they heard a chaotic sound of footsteps coming from the shrubs in front of them, as if something was running towards them.

Allen immediately raised his gun and aimed it at the bushes in front of him.

“Allen?!” Surprisingly, it was Diane, Martin, and Jin who emerged from the bushes.

Their current condition was not good. Jin seemed to be injured, with Diane and Martin supporting him. All three of them were panting heavily and had terrified looks on their faces.

“Diane!” Allen and the others rushed over to help them.

Zheng Wei helped the shirtless Jin, noticing that his current condition was extremely bad.

He had been cut by something on his shoulder, with the wound starting from his shoulder blade and piercing through his entire back, with exposed flesh and blood. It looked gruesome and horrifying.

The wound was bleeding continuously, with Jin’s entire back being stained red with blood.

“What happened?” The bloody scene caused Zheng Wei’s vision to black out for a moment. He quickly took off his coat and placed it on the wound to help stop the bleeding for Jin.

“Ah!” Jin let out a painful cry, his expression twisted with pain.

“Thank God!” Seeing Allen and the others, Diane cried and yelled, “Quickly leave this place, there’s something in the forest. Jin is injured, hurry and take us away.”

She pulled on Allen’s clothes and spoke incoherently, trembling all over as if she had encountered something extremely terrifying.

“Diane, Diane!” Allen held her up. “Calm down!”

Then he turned to ask Martin, “Martin, what did you guys encounter? How did Jin get hurt?”

“We encountered something,” Martin said, his face pale. He also seemed quite scared. “That thing cut Jin with a sickle.”

Martin’s voice trembled slightly as he described how terrifying that thing was, but he couldn’t explain what it was exactly.

“What are you guys talking about?” Allen was angry with their vague speech. “Could you be more clear?”

“I don’t fucking know what that thing was,” Martin suddenly became irritable. “It looked like a rotting mummy, holding a sickle behind Jin. It was too late when I discovered it, and I couldn’t kill it!!”

“What are you saying? Are you delirious?” Allen stared at Martin in disbelief, unable to understand what he was talking about.

“Shut the fuck up!” Martin roared. “You have no idea what I’ve been through!”

“Enough!” Zheng Wei couldn’t take it anymore. He looked at the two who were getting louder and couldn’t help but shout at them, “The most important thing now is to take Jin to a safe place. We can talk about other things later, okay?”

The surroundings quieted down, and Martin and Allen looked at Jin, who was pale. They wiped their faces and finally calmed down a bit. They didn’t want to argue; they were just overwhelmed by fear.

“Quickly bring Jin to the car,” Zheng Wei said quickly to them, constantly looking around. “We need to leave here quickly.”

Zheng Wei was right. The most important thing now was to leave here first. It wouldn’t be easy to leave once the evil spirit caught up.

“I’ll carry him on my back,” Allen said, carrying Jin on his back. The group quickly left the place along the way they came.

The swaying shadows of the trees under the moonlight seemed like ghostly hands reaching out from hell. The rustling sound of the wind blowing through the leaves seemed like mocking laughter to these young people, casting a heavy shadow over their hearts.

The group ran away in fear, soon reaching the edge of the forest. Just as victory seemed to be within reach, Jin, who was lying on Allen’s back, suddenly spoke up.

“That person is Mr. Hersman,” his voice weak but clear.

“What did you say?” Everyone stopped and looked at Jin, thinking they had misheard him. “I said, that thing is Mr. Hersman,” Jin repeated himself.

“What are you talking about?” Allen couldn’t help turning his head to look at Jin. “Brother, you need to stay sober.”

He thought Jin’s head was muddled from losing too much blood.

“I’m very sober,” Jin’s voice was weak, but his expression was clear.

“That thing is not human.’ Jin’s hand tightly grasped Allen’s shoulder as he continued, “It’s the dead Mr. Hersman, he’s come back to life.”

“Jin, this is not the time to joke,” Allen continued walking forward, his voice unsteady, not knowing if it was from anger or fear.

“I’m not joking!” Jin shouted. “I saw his ring. He had a ring on his hand, the same ring as in that photo.”

Jin’s words sent shivers down everyone’s spine.

“Damn it! Damn it!” Martin let out a low growl that changed pitch. “So it was that bastard!”

He snatched a gun from Allen’s hand and turned around to go back. Martin deeply hated Mr. Hersman, and this hatred was enough to overcome his fear.

“Martin!” Zheng Wei held him down. “What do you want to do?”

“Are you planning to take this gun and kill a ghost that has been dead for over 40 years?” Zheng Wei grabbed him and wouldn’t let go.

“Don’t do something stupid, Martin. The most important thing now is to leave here first. Even if you don’t care about yourself, you have to think about Jin, okay?”

Just as Martin was about to say something, his face suddenly changed, and he pushed Zheng Wei away.

A sickle flew past Zheng Wei’s cheek and grazed a tree in front of him, embedding itself in the trunk. Zheng Wei looked at the sickle and his face changed.

If Martin hadn’t pushed him away in time, the sickle would have been stuck in his neck right now. Martin saved Zheng Wei’s life, but the sickle left a deep gash on his arm.

“He’s here.” Martin covered his bleeding right arm and stared complexly behind Zheng Wei.

Several people followed his gaze and saw a black figure appear among the scattered tree shadows not far away. Mr. Hersman!
