Chapter 2: The Apocalypse Descends
After gouging out the green-furred wolf’s eye, Lou Su carried Chu Xihen’s backpack and led Wan Ming out of the convenience store.
The two green-furred wolves outside the convenience store had been killed by several ability users working together, and the people who had run out of the airport were called back.
Each exit of the waiting room was blocked, guarded by ability users, while ordinary people were scattered, finding places to hide.
Lou Su, with Chu Xihen and his two lackeys, were among them.
“Everyone, quiet down and listen to me!” Suddenly, a man with a loudspeaker shouted, attracting everyone’s attention.
There were thousands of people in the entire waiting room, but they were all frightened by the green-furred wolves that had descended from the sky earlier. Just when everyone was at a loss, the man stepped forward at the perfect time.
“My name is Hao Ren. I happen to know how to deal with these green-furred wolves. Now that the apocalypse has descended, we humans must unite to survive. Therefore, we need those among you who have awakened abilities to stand up and fight these green-furred wolves with us, protecting ordinary people!”
Hao Ren was a robust man with a square face, full of integrity, and looked no older than forty.
Behind him stood more than ten people, all of whom were the ability users who had just killed the green-furred wolves outside.
Including the ability users guarding the entrances and exits, there were no more than fifty people in total, making it very difficult to protect the thousands of people in the waiting room.
However, after Hao Ren finished speaking, no one stood up.
Hao Ren continued, “I know that some of you don’t trust me because we’ve never met. If you have any questions about the apocalypse, the mutated species, and abilities, feel free to ask. I will answer them one by one.”
At this moment, someone raised their hand and asked, “How did this apocalypse suddenly descend? Overnight, a perfect city turned into ruins and debris, with monsters everywhere. People who are bitten also get infected…”
Hao Ren gave a bitter smile. “Actually, it wasn’t sudden at all. For the past two years, people have been posting messages online about the impending apocalypse, but very few believed it. The reason our world has become like this is because it began to merge with an infinite game world this morning. The monsters you speak of, which are mutated species, are all invading from that world.”
“Infinite game world? What is that? Is it a game?” the person continued to ask.
Hao Ren nodded. “That’s right, it’s a game. Two years ago, there were many cases of missing people, which you should all know about. Those missing people were selected to enter the infinite game to clear levels. Those who failed died. In the end, only one hundred and twenty-one survivors from all over the world came out of that game.”
“The green-furred wolves that have appeared now are just the weakest mutated species in that game. In the future, there will be many more powerful mutated species. If we humans don’t unite to fight the mutated species, this world will be destroyed by them!”
After these words were spoken, the crowd began to discuss. Indeed, as Hao Ren said, many people had gone missing two years ago, but no one would have thought that they were pulled into an infinite game to clear levels.
“Is the fact that people have been awakening abilities one after another in the past two years also related to that infinite game?” someone else asked.
“Yes, the infinite game was a chance for humanity to save itself before the apocalypse descended. The reason why we humans had two years to awaken abilities is because someone cleared the infinite game. Otherwise, the apocalypse would have descended two years ago. At that time, we humans were all ordinary people, and there was no way we could fight the mutated species!”
When Hao Ren mentioned the person who cleared the game, his eyes were filled with undisguised admiration.
“Excuse me, Mr. Hao, are you a survivor of that game?” Wan Ming, who was next to Lou Su, asked.
Hao Ren smiled slightly. “Indeed.”
Hearing Hao Ren’s words, Chu Xihen, who had been spacing out while leaning on Lou Su, looked up at him.
“What? Are you interested in him?” Lou Su’s voice sounded in Chu Xihen’s ear, his warm breath tickling his ear, causing him to subconsciously tilt his head away.
“Looks average,” Chu Xihen commented.
Lou Su chuckled upon hearing this. He had forgotten that this person next to him always judged people by their appearance first.
“Were you scared just now?” Lou Su asked again.
When he rushed into the convenience store, he saw Chu Xihen shrinking into a corner, looking extremely pitiful.
Before Chu Xihen could answer, Wan Ming quickly explained, “Boss, I didn’t abandon him on purpose. The situation was urgent at the time, and he didn’t even know to run. I really couldn’t take care of him.”
“I know. He doesn’t blame you,” Lou Su said before asking Chu Xihen, “Right?”
Chu Xihen replied, “Yeah, I don’t blame you. I should thank you for bringing me to find Lou Su.”
Seeing how sensible he was, Wan Ming’s tense mood immediately relaxed. “You’re welcome. I’m just helping the boss. But I really suggest you train with us. Before the apocalypse, it was fine if you didn’t want to move, but now the world is full of mutated species. If you’re still like this today, the boss might not be able to rush to save you every time.”
“That’s right, you’re too weak now. I can kill three of you with one punch,” Han Chong, Lou Su’s other lackey, also said.
He was burly and had a large waist, and his fist was as big as a bowl. Plus, he was an ability user who had awakened strength, so he could indeed kill three ordinary people with one punch.
Chu Xihen smiled faintly and looked at Lou Su’s handsome face. “It’s okay, just do your best.”
Besides, Lou Su was about to meet another male lead soon. When the two of them collided like Mars and Earth, they would only have eyes for each other, so how would they have time to care about cannon fodder like him?
Wan Ming and Han Chong were rendered speechless by his indifferent attitude.
At this time, Hao Ren in front had finished speaking, and ability users began to walk out of the crowd one after another.
He asked Lou Su, “Aren’t you going to step forward?”
As one of the male protagonists of the novel, Lou Su was of course also an ability user, and he had even awakened a very powerful special ability. It was just that he had never had practical experience before and was not yet proficient in using his ability, otherwise he could have single-handedly killed the green-furred wolf in the convenience store earlier.
Lou Su replied, “No rush. Let’s take a look first.”
He wasn’t in a hurry, but someone else was.
After arranging the ability users, Hao Ren walked through the crowd towards them.
“This gentleman, I saw that your marksmanship was very accurate when you were dealing with the mutated species earlier. You are also an ability user, right?” After Hao Ren asked Lou Su, he turned to Wan Ming and Han Chong next to him. “If I’m not mistaken, you two are a strength awakener and a speed awakener, right?”
Wan Ming and Han Chong’s abilities were easy to identify, but Hao Ren couldn’t tell what Lou Su’s ability was.
Although he hadn’t seen Lou Su use his ability, he could tell from the other party’s marksmanship and reaction to the mutated species that he was an ability user. If he hadn’t awakened, no matter how much he trained, his physical fitness couldn’t be so outstanding.
“How… how did you know?” Han Chong panicked for a moment and turned to look at Lou Su.
He was impulsive and well-developed, so he couldn’t hide anything.
Lou Su, on the other hand, calmly asked Hao Ren, “You said you would answer any questions about the apocalypse, does that still count?”
“It counts. Feel free to ask any questions you have, brother.” In order to get closer to each other, Hao Ren directly changed the way he addressed Lou Su.
“You said that the mutated species will become stronger and stronger in the future, so how can our human abilities become stronger?” Lou Su didn’t deny that he was an ability user. It would be a little awkward to forcefully hide it when he had already been seen through.
He had awakened his ability for almost two years, but his ability had not changed. Therefore, he guessed that ability upgrades were closely related to the sudden appearance of the mutated species, and he wanted to ask Hao Ren for confirmation.
“It’s rare that you thought of this so quickly.” Hao Ren gave Lou Su an appreciative look. “Some mutated species carry skill cards. After killing them, you can randomly obtain a skill card with an attribute. If the attribute of the skill card is the same as the attribute of your awakened ability, then you can strengthen the ability. If the attributes are different, then there is no way, you can only find someone else to exchange.”
“Skill card? Does that mean you can get skills?” Lou Su grabbed the key point and continued to inquire.
Hao Ren was becoming more and more fond of Lou Su. His mind was quick, and even if he wasn’t an ability user, it would be useful to bring him by his side.
He said with a smile, “Yes, everyone can get at least two skills. One is a physical skill, just like these two brothers’ strength or speed skills; the other is an elemental skill, which is a natural element such as gold, wood, water, fire, earth, wind, thunder, and electricity; after awakening an ability, you must have the corresponding skills to exert the maximum effect of the ability!”
“In addition to that, there is also a special type of skill that can be used regardless of whether you have awakened an ability or not, but it is hard to come by. You may not encounter one in your lifetime. If you do, you can learn as many as you can!”
