The Duke’s Daughter is Involved in Magical Technology Chapter 73.2

It wasn’t until the end of the dinner that the Duchess finally said to Aresia, “Aresia, take Jorgus for a tour around the castle.”

“Okay, Mother.”

Amos, who admired Jorgus, was about to speak when he was interrupted by his mother, “Amos, stay. I need to talk to you.”

Amos, reluctant but obedient, settled back in his seat. “What’s the matter, Mother?”

Grysenna calmly wiped her mouth and said, “It’s about your willingness to entertain the idea of an arranged marriage.”

Amos: …No, let him go.

He looked towards Aresia for help, but she shifted her gaze to Jorgus and asked, “Where shall we go?”

“Right now?” Jorgus replied.

As Amos saw the distress in her eyes, he signaled his understanding as they bid farewell and left the dining room together.

As they didn’t actually tour the castle, Aresia directly led him to the garden.

The fading sunlight cast a golden hue, bathing the entire garden in a warm, orange glow. The late summer heat was gradually receding, and the evening breeze brought a refreshing coolness.

Though she guessed he might already know, Aresia still asked, “Do you already know why we asked for your help?”

Upon hearing her question, Jorgus realized that his mother had not informed the Duke’s side about what he already knew.

Perhaps they hoped to give him more time to consider.

Jorgus nodded. “Yes, my mother has already informed me.”

Aresia asked earnestly, “Are you willing to help with this? If not, you can leave, and I won’t hold it against you.”

Jorgus looked at Aresia, and after not seeing her for a summer, it seemed she had grown a bit, her features gradually maturing in a more captivating direction, signifying her increased radiance.

“If I’m not willing, what will you do?” he inquired.

Aresia responded sincerely, “Probably find someone else to help.”

Upon hearing this, for some reason, Jorgus felt a bit uncomfortable, which made him frown involuntarily.

In truth, he knew that his involvement was not essential. The rumor about them was widely known, and Grysenna had asked him to pretend to be Aresia’s prospective fiancé.

However, due to his commoner status, he was likely not on the Duke and Duchess’s radar.

When Aresia unhesitatingly mentioned finding someone else to pretend to be her fiancé, Jorgus’s initial reaction wasn’t pleasant, which vaguely made him realize that something about the situation seemed off.

However, without delving deeper into this matter, he forced himself to ignore the slight discomfort and asked, “So, what exactly happened?”

If he was to help, he needed to understand the reasons behind it.

Aresia nodded. “It’s indeed clear to you.”

It turned out that they had invited an eighth-level mage, a teacher. This mage was from overseas and didn’t have local citizenship. The Emperor of Holy Lotean was actively seeking to retain this mage.

“My father, due to my teacher’s influence, proposed a marriage alliance to us. We don’t want to get involved in the Emperor’s affairs, so I agreed to my parent suggestions finding a fiancé to put an end to the issue.”

Jorgus found Aresia’s captivating experiences during this summer quite remarkable. He, being a young man, felt that the powerful eighth-level mage was beyond his reach. Despite this, he couldn’t help but envy Aresia’s luck. However, he was now focused on the present issue.

After considering it seriously, he realized that the Duke and Duchess indeed had a way to resolve this problem.

That way was—

“Does this have any impact?”

Aresia understood his concern. “What?”

He asked, “If I were to pretend to be your fiancé…”

(“…” “?”)

His mother had once questioned him and advised him to consider it carefully.

After listening, Aresia couldn’t help but chuckle. “Isn’t this supposed to be your concern? Why are you asking me?”

Jorgus explained, “In matters like this, people are typically stricter with woman. Even if I were to later end the relationship, it’s not just about whether I’m engaged or not. People will talk. It might even affect your marriage.”

He was acutely aware of the impact of gossip, especially on his mother, Lily, a single parent. Although Lily did her best to shield him from it, he couldn’t avoid hearing unsavory comments and malicious rumors about his mother.

—Jorgus’s premature maturity was largely due to these circumstances.

Moreover, Aresia was not just a teammate, but his only female friend. Their interactions weren’t affected by the pretense, and it didn’t hinder their relationship. However, if Aresia were to have a genuine engagement, his presence might become an uncomfortable reminder for her intended partner. Additionally, others might perceive their relationship as ambiguous, like when they participated in the team trial, leading to rumors about their relationship status.

Hearing his concerns, Aresia was momentarily at a loss for words, surprised by his level of consideration and thoughtfulness.

She couldn’t help but chuckle at his initial statement. “What man? You’re just a boy after all.”

Jorgus frowned, clearly displeased. He was more mature than his peers, with a composed and restrained demeanor, and didn’t appreciate Aresia calling him a boy.

Despite his displeasure, he didn’t deny it and let Aresia continue.

“If you were to swap this concern to another person, it would indeed be quite troublesome. I, on the other hand, don’t really mind. I wasn’t planning to marry anyway, and I don’t have anyone in mind, so this concern is unnecessary for me.”

A mage over two hundred years old, despite being a blend of a fifteen-year-old’s temperament, seemed to have no interest in love or marriage, and instead, was more inclined to conduct magical experiments.

Jorgus furrowed his brow at Aresia’s words, and then relaxed it in response. “I understand, you have this option.”

Aresia was puzzled. “What?”

“I don’t plan to get married. I’ve never encountered anyone who I felt want to get married,” Jorgus explained.

“Oh?” Aresia was surprised. “You have this plan?”

Jorgus nodded. “Yes.”

For various reasons, not just Aresia’s, but also due to his mother’s single-handed upbringing and the difficulties she faced, the toil and hardship of her efforts, Jorgus was not inclined to involve anyone else in these struggles.

He was well aware of his mother’s strength and determination, and the risks he would need to take to become stronger. There was no guarantee that he would survive these dangerous endeavors, and he couldn’t bear the thought of leaving his loved ones behind.

After a lot of contemplation, Jorgus ultimately decided it might be best not to get married.

“It won’t affect you.” ()

“Understood.” ()

After Aresia had finished speaking, she realized, “So, you’ve agreed?”

Jorgus nodded. “Yes, given your concerns, I see no reason not to agree.”

“Thank you. I’m glad you’re willing to help!”

Aresia was genuinely happy; she no longer needed to consider other candidates. She understood that it might be awkward for a stranger to assume the role of her fiancé. However, she felt at ease with Jorgus. They had spent a considerable amount of time together and had become friends. Their quiet and reserved natures made their interactions effortless.

“By the way, if you ever develop feelings for someone, be sure to tell me so that we can end our arrangement,” Aresia stated.

Without hesitation, Jorgus shook his head. “I’ve never felt that way about anyone.”

He knew his character well. Even though their relationship was false, he didn’t want to give anyone the wrong impression, or worse, face unwarranted gossip that could affect their future pursuits.

“Everyone’s feelings may change,” Aresia pointed out.

Jorgus fell silent.

Seeing that he didn’t want to continue the conversation, Aresia switched to discussing the script with Jorgus.

Aresia was adept at setting up plotlines and crafting stories, and after hearing her father’s input, the script flowed effortlessly from her. It was based on rumors around the school about the instant attraction between Aresia and Jorgus during a trial, their smooth progress despite family opposition, and ultimately their engagement, aided by the Duke’s assistance and recognition of Jorgus’s excellence.

Jorgus carefully listened to Aresia’s script, taking note of how she described their interactions and the content of his confession. He was attentive and sincere, paying close attention to the details Aresia fabricated.

Before long, Jorgus, somewhat unexpectedly, asked, “I have a question, may I?”

“What is it?”

“Now that you have a plan in place, what about your brother, Amos? Is he going to find someone as well?”

Aresia hesitated. “Probably, yes?”

It had been a long time since Amos’s mother had tried to set him up, so it was possible that, with the Emperor’s relationships at stake, the focus might shift onto Amos.

Despite the Emperor having no princess in his generation, and thus no immediate children of his own, there were several eligible princesses in the previous generation.

Amos, as an older brother, shouldn’t be burdened due to his sister’s predicament.
