here were also many people outside the gate of Xuanhe Mansion, but unlike in Qing’an Mansion, the people outside the gate here seemed to be in better condition.
Furthermore, there were two sheds nearby where servants from wealthy families inside the city were distributing porridge.
To avoid standing out too much, Gu Yundong arranged Yang Shi and the others not far away. She took two bowls to get some porridge and also inquired about the situation.
An elderly woman responded, “It’s not easy to enter the city. I heard that the prefect is worried that too many refugees entering the city will cause chaos, so there are conditions for entry.”
“What conditions?”
A girl about the same age as Gu Yundong sneered and chuckled after looking her up and down, “Even if I tell you, it’s useless. Look at you, you definitely can’t meet them.”
Ignoring her, Gu Yundong asked the old woman, “Please tell me.”
“To enter the city, you not only need household registration certificates, but each person also has to pay five taels of silver.”
“Five taels?” Damn, they’re robbing people.
Five taels per person, and there were four of them. Didn’t that mean they needed twenty taels?
They did have household registration certificates. Gu Dajiang had insisted that they carry them with them at all times.
Seeing her surprised expression, the girl beside her sneered again, “Telling you is useless. Look at you, you’re probably lucky if you have five copper coins on you. It’s better to honestly wait outside and hope for some kind-hearted person to give you something to eat. What’s the point of struggling like this?”
Gu Yundong suddenly turned her head to look at her, “What’s wrong with you? No one is paying attention to you, yet you keep seeking attention. Do I know you well?”
“You…”
Gu Yundong turned and walked away. The girl was furious, “Who do you think you are? Just wait, you won’t be able to enter the city and will have to spend the night here.”
Gu Yundong had already returned to Yang Shi and the others, handing them the porridge she had brought. “Drink this first. We’ll enter the city in a while.”
The four of them obediently finished the two bowls of porridge. The people distributing the porridge had already packed up and entered the city.
When the area at the gate quieted down a bit, she stood up, pulled the cart, and took the three of them to the gate.
There were many soldiers guarding the gate, and they were all very vigilant. Their swords gleamed with a chilly light.
Gu Yundong had been observing and noticed a young soldier on the left who had a good attitude. He even reached out to help the families going into the city.
She walked directly to him and handed him her household registration certificate.
Her actions quickly attracted other refugees who were still lingering at the gate, especially the girl who had been cold and sarcastic to her earlier, who sneered when she saw Gu Yundong’s actions.
The soldier also looked at Gu Yundong with some surprise, examining her clothing, complexion, and her household registration certificate before saying, “Do you know the rules for entering the city?”
“Is it five taels per person?”
The soldier nodded. “There are four of you, so that’s a total of twenty taels.”
“I have it.” Gu Yundong was grateful to Qian San for ‘kindly’ giving her twenty taels of silver.
With the five taels they had obtained earlier and the twenty taels now, they should be able to last a few days after entering the city, until she found a way to make money.
The soldier watched in amazement as Gu Yundong pulled out twenty taels of silver from her pockets.
The girl behind her was even more incredulous. Wasn’t she a poor beggar? Why did she have so much money?
