Chapter 134: Is he Human?

Jiang Mixia blinked once more.

She recalled that salted duck eggs seemed to be a favorite of certain individuals…

Glancing around, Jiang Mixia inquired, “Where is Xiaoxing? Not at home?”

“She went to borrow shoe patterns. She said Guangtai’s shoes are getting tight, and with the weather getting colder, wearing small cotton shoes can be uncomfortable. She needs to make a new pair quickly in these days,” Yang Shi replied with a smile.

“I see…”

A smile played on Jiang Mixia’s lips, “I heard from my mother that a matchmaker visited recently, proposing a match for Xiaoxing?”

Upon hearing this, Yang shi couldn’t help but sigh, “I’ve been worried about this matter. I was concerned that Xiaoxing’s past engagement might impact her marriage prospects, but now that everyone knows about Hong Sanbao’s character and understands it wasn’t Xiaoxing’s fault, the matchmaking hasn’t been affected. There have been quite a few suitors coming by this year.”

“However, Xiaoxing refuses to consider any matches. She insists on staying at home for a few more years, spending time with her parents. Seeing her like this, it seems she’s been troubled by what happened with Hong Sanbao, and it’s been weighing on her mind.”

“I tried to talk to her with your uncle, but she remained silent, looking visibly upset. Your uncle and I are concerned that she may be troubled by this and we don’t want to push her too hard.”

“Just a few days ago, another matchmaker came by with a proposal from a family in the neighboring town. They described the eldest son as hardworking, respectful to his parents, and well-regarded by the community. Even your uncle and I discreetly checked him out. The young man is decent-looking too. However, when we told Xiaoxing about this, she flat out refused to consider it, leaving your uncle and me in a quandary…”

“Don’t worry, Auntie. When it comes to marriage, it’s all about fate. When the time is right, things will fall into place smoothly. They say good things come to those who wait, and marriage is no exception.”

Jiang Mixia smiled reassuringly, “In my opinion, Xiaoxing is kind-hearted and beautiful. Uncle and you are sensible people. I’m sure she will find a good match. Sometimes, the best match could be right around the corner, waiting to be discovered.”

Yang Shi was puzzled by Jiang Mixia’s words, feeling like she had said something profound yet vague. She didn’t know how to respond immediately. However, Jiang Mixia’s assurance about Xiaoxing’s future marriage prospects put Yang Shi’s mind at ease.

The Third House was experiencing exceptionally good fortune lately, and those close to the family seemed to benefit from it visibly. With a good harvest this year, Jiang Chushi’s successful plans, and recent positive news from the Fang family, things were looking up for everyone.

With one good event following another at home, Yang shi felt like they were truly basking in the Third House’s good fortune. Since Jiang Mixia had spoken so positively, she was confident that Xiaoxing would indeed find a good match in the future.

“I’ll take your words to heart, Xiaoxing is truly blessed,” Yang Shi replied with a smile.

As the night grew dark, Jiang Mixia exchanged a few more words with Yang  Shi before heading home.

With winter nights falling early, dinner was served and finished early as well. Jiang Mixia visited the main house after dinner. Upon returning home, she soaked her feet, freshened up, and then settled into bed.

The fire in the house burned brightly, keeping the room warm. The blankets had been warmed, allowing her to slip in wearing only light clothing without feeling the cold.

Seeing Song Jingyun gazing at the ceiling beams with his arm as a pillow, Jiang Mixia playfully poked his cheek, “What are you thinking about?”

“I learned about Zuo Zhuan today. It mentioned how Sun Qiao pacified internal conflicts among the nobles, implemented reforms, reorganized noble lands and peasant systems, increased financial revenue, and lightened the burden on commoners,” Song Jingyun explained. “I was pondering how the current land and population taxes for farmers are decreasing each year, while taxes for merchants are increasing, mirroring Sun Qiao’s reforms.”

“I believe this approach is still inadequate. The government levies taxes based on a fixed percentage, regardless of the amount of land owned or profits made from business. This uniformity places a heavy burden on commoners while being somewhat negligible for wealthy landowners. I feel we need to consider a more appropriate solution to address this issue, one that ensures ordinary farmers can afford basic necessities without the need to reduce taxes,” Song Jingyun remarked.

Jiang Mixia paused, reflecting on the transformation she witnessed in her husband within just a month. From studying basic texts like the Three Character Classic a month ago, he now delved into contemplating tax systems and their impact on people’s livelihoods. It seemed as though he had transitioned from a primary school student to a diligent research student in such a short time.

Curious, Jiang Mixia pondered how her husband managed to absorb information into his mind at such a rapid pace while studying at the academy. She even jokingly wondered if he was truly human, considering the speed and efficiency at which he processed information mentally. It felt like his brain functioned faster than manually inputting data into a computer!

At that moment, Jiang Mixia couldn’t help but entertain the thought of whether her husband might be something more than just an ordinary human being…

“Wife?” Song Jingyun tilted his head as he noticed Jiang Mixia’s momentary distraction.

Jiang Mixia refocused, “Yes, you’re right. Tax reform is a complex issue, affecting various aspects of society. It involves numerous interests at all levels of the government and cannot be achieved overnight with a simple decree.”

“While your intentions are noble, expressing such ideas currently, given your status and position, may not yield immediate results. It may require holding a certain official position and having influence before formally proposing such reforms,” Jiang Mixia explained.

“I understand,” Song Jingyun nodded. “You’ve taught me to consider my role and responsibilities based on my position.”

Like a stone that may seem ordinary to most but could be considered unpolished jade by someone with knowledge and authority, people tend to believe the latter’s perspective. Their broader experience and understanding lend credibility to their words.

If he were to succeed in the imperial examinations and rise to a prominent position, his words and actions would carry more weight and garner greater acceptance from others.

It seemed that the imperial examinations not only provided protection for his family but also opened doors for him to pursue his aspirations.

Song Jingyun felt like he had found a second goal in his studies.

Observing Song Jingyun’s thoughtful response, Jiang Mixia nodded in agreement, “Well said.”

Song Jingyun chuckled softly.

Meanwhile, Jiang Chubao wore a gloomy expression.

After twisting his foot while walking and unable to find assistance on the deserted winter streets, he resorted to using a makeshift cane found by the roadside to limp his way back home.

Upon his return, his family was alarmed and promptly summoned Doctor Yang to assess his injury.
