Chapter 6 – The Team

The gunfire that had lasted the whole day gradually quieted down. Military heavy trucks shuttled back and forth transporting supplies. Outside, construction of walls and barbed wire fencing had already begun.

This truly deserved to be called the base where the male lead resided. While other places were still in a panic, flustered and helpless, the Southern Base had already begun to take shape.

That evening, Xiao Chen and Luo Junze returned to the villa with the other four members.

“What’s that smell, it’s so fragrant!”

“Damn, after being busy all day, I’m starving to death.”

“Can’t you two pay a little attention to your image?”

Lin Luo and Luo Yueyue heard the voices and came out to greet them.

The four young men caught sight of the two beautiful women, and in an instant, their eyes lit up.

“Vice-captain, that’s not fair, hiding beauties away in a golden house.”

“Vice-captain, aren’t you going to introduce us?”

Luo Junze looked helplessly at the group, then introduced them to each other.

The ones who had spoken just now were Chen Tong and Wang Ming, both in their early twenties and lively in temperament.

The other two were Wei Long, a big, sturdy man, and Sun Xiang, tall and thin, with a somewhat shy demeanor.

Lin Luo studied the four of them curiously. So these were the strong companions at the male lead’s side. Whether before the apocalypse or after, they were all top-tier experts, brothers who could entrust their lives to one another.

“You must be hungry, take a rest for now, dinner will be ready very soon.”

With that, she returned to the kitchen with Luo Yueyue.

“Sis, let me help.”

“Me too, me too.”

“Damn, don’t steal my spot.”

“First come, first served.”

Before long, dinner was ready, and everyone ate while laughing and joking around.

As they ate, Chen Tong and the others began making faces at one another, until finally Wang Ming was pushed forward.

Scratching his head shyly, he asked Lin Luo: “Sis, do you have a boyfriend? If not, what do you think of us brothers?”

As soon as the words left his mouth, he suddenly felt the deadly gaze of the captain upon him. Stiffly, Wang Ming turned his head to see his captain’s face darkened and filled with coldness, and he shuddered.

He looked desperately to his teammates for help, his face full of despair.

The others had also felt the chill radiating from the captain. Their expressions said “you’re on your own.” as they collectively lowered their heads and quietly shoveled food into their mouths.

“Well, I was just joking, just joking!” Wang Ming was about to cry. Thinking of the ways his boss had of tormenting people, he didn’t even know if he would live to see tomorrow’s sun.

“Pfft…” Lin Luo, watching Wang Ming’s face change colors like a palette, laughed unkindly.

When the girl laughed, she was bright and dazzling, blooming like a flower, leaving the group of men stunned.

Xiao Chen, looking at the little girl being so charming and eye-catching, grew even darker-faced. He would settle accounts with her later.

Luo Junze noticed the captain’s unabashed, naked gaze fixed on Lin Luo, and a trace of loneliness flickered in his heart.

After dinner, everyone sat around the sofa together.

Xiao Chen spoke about the plans for tomorrow.

“Everyone, get ready. Tomorrow we set out for H City to transport a batch of military weapons.”

“Military weapons? How many?” Luo Junze asked.

“A huge quantity. If we can bring it back safely, it will be of extraordinary significance to the establishment of the base.”

When the others heard this, their expressions grew solemn. They all understood how important this mission was.

Xiao Chen swept his gaze over them. “Rest well tonight. We leave at eight tomorrow. Dismissed.”

The group dispersed immediately—some went to bathe, some to rest. In the blink of an eye, only Lin Luo and the others remained.

Lin Luo exchanged a glance with Luo Yueyue. With her half-baked knife skills, she really did not dare go out with just Yueyue to kill zombies. Rather than facing unknown risks, it would be better to follow the male lead and his team, finding opportunities to train herself along the way.

“That… can we go with you too?”

“Yes, I want to practice my ability. Staying home all the time is just too boring.”

Luo Junze looked helplessly at his sister. “Don’t make trouble. It’s too dangerous out there.”

“I won’t listen! If you don’t take us, then Xiao Luo Luo and I will just go out and kill zombies on our own.”

Rubbing his aching temples, Luo Junze finally turned his gaze toward the captain in compromise.

Xiao Chen curved his lips into a mischievous smile and looked at Lin Luo. “You want to go?”

Lin Luo nodded hard, her face full of anticipation as she looked at him.

Xiao Chen leaned in close to the little girl and said something in a voice that only the two of them could hear.

After hearing it, a crimson blush spread across Lin Luo’s cheeks at a speed visible to the naked eye. She glared at the man in shame and fled in a panic.

That man was too awful. He had said that if she kissed him once, he would take her along tomorrow. Shameless! Hmph!

Luo Yueyue stared blankly at the two of them, then turned and ran after Lin Luo.

Luo Junze looked sternly at the captain. Though he was his subordinate, he was also a brother who had shared life and death with him. “Are you serious?”

Xiao Chen answered just as seriously, his expression earnest. “You know me. Once I’ve decided, it’s for a lifetime.”

Hearing the solemn vow-like tone in the man’s voice, Luo Junze sighed inwardly.

He nodded. “I understand.”

Before he sank too deeply, he had to pull his heart back. As long as they were happy, that was enough.

On the other side—

“Xiao Luo Luo, tell me honestly, what’s going on between you and Xiao Chen?” Luo Yueyue had an expression that said If you dare hide it from me, you’ll be sorry.

“If I say nothing at all is going on between us, would you believe me?” Lin Luo looked at her best friend cautiously.

“What do you think?” The glance she gave said it all.

“Well… really, there’s nothing. Between him and me, it’s impossible.”

A trace of bitterness stirred in Lin Luo’s heart. Between her and the male lead, there could absolutely never be anything. Perhaps she was nothing more than a little cat or dog he teased when he was idle. When the female lead appeared, she would be nothing at all.

“Alright then. But if anything happens, remember to tell me. We’re best friends after all.” Seeing Lin Luo’s dazed, broken expression, Luo Yueyue spoke softly in comfort.

Lin Luo hugged her friend tightly and buried her head in her chest. “Mm, Yueyue, you’re so good.”
