Chapter 31: The Last Battle Part 3
Gilbert-sama showed me the book about Lou Garou’s 『Holy Mark』. He opened the related page to me and in that book, I saw the same drawing as the crest I had seen before. It seemed when the holy mark was activated, the same crest would be floating on top of my chest.
“This is not a history book or research book about Lou Garou though. This is a fairy tale book.”
“You did say this book was written for children.”
He had skimmed through the content of the book but he clearly remembered about the mark.
“When I first saw it, I thought it was a very beautiful illustration. Who would’ve thought the mark was real….”
I wasn’t targeted by the Wolf Witch thanks to the holy marks from my parents. Not only that, the mark also saved Dietrich-sama and released him from his curse. I really needed to thank my parents deeply.
I hugged the book tightly and muttered my gratitude to my parents when suddenly, Dietrich-sama made an unexpected remark.
“I will give that book to Melodia.”
“N-No… This is a valuable book, isn’t it?”
The binding was made from leather and the title of the book was covered in gold. Just from a single glance alone, I already knew this was not an ordinary book.
“It’s fine. I’m sure the book will be taken care of more preciously in Melodia’s hand.”
“Indeed. I also support this notion.”
The atmosphere somehow made me feel like I shouldn’t try to act reserved. It felt like it’d be rude of me if I kept on refusing.
“If that’s the case then I will gratefully accept this book.”
Both of the Fenrir brothers smiled when I said I’d obediently accept the book. The destructive power of these two beauty’s smiles was way too powerful. I ended up unintentionally closing my eyes from how dazzling it was.
In the afternoon, I went to practice the light magic again. Today, Dietrich-sama was here to observe me. He said since he had returned to his human form, he was able to finish his official duties in half the usual time. He had too much spare time so he came here to watch me.
“I’ll be watching over you. Please don’t push yourself too hard.”
“I will do my best moderately then.”
Trying to not pay attention to the piercing gaze behind me was difficult to do. I cast the spell in a more tense state of mind than usual.
Strangely enough, I was able to chant the spell more smoothly than usual. The flow of magic power was easier to grasp than usual too.
The basement was enveloped in dazzling light.
“Huh? What’s this… So blinding…”
“Melodia, close your eyes!”
Dietrich-sama shouted as he hugged me from behind and covered my eyes with his hand. The light continued on for about 5 minutes. Only after the light subsided that Dietrich-sama released me from his grasp.
“What an amazing brilliance.”
“This must be the true light magic that could purify the Wolf Witch.”
Could it be, the light magic I casted just now was a huge success?
“I-I am finally able to use it.”
“Yes, Melodia. Is your body alright?”
“You’re amazing, Melodia!!”
I turned around and hugged Dietrich-sama.
“Dietrich-sama, I’m so happy!”
With this, we had taken a big leap forward. Now, the only thing left to do was to defeat the Wolf Witch.
It turned out they already guessed where the Wolf Witch’s main base was. Although they weren’t entirely sure yet. There was a red circle map on the map that Gilbert-sama unfolded.
“There’s an old castle 3 days carriage ride away from the royal capital near Lake Lanejoert. There’s no human settlement around and that place has the highest wolf related incident in this kingdom. The castle is surrounded by thick forest and bottomless swamps. The forest is called the ‘Man-Eating Forest’ and people are advised to steer away from it.”
It was said in the past, the brave knights of the Fenrir family once ventured into that Man-Eating Forest to defeat the Wolf Witch.
“Unfortunately, not a single knight returned.”
Apparently, they had already decided to not go to the Man-Eating Forest to defeat the Wolf Witch one hundred years ago after about 30 people became her victim.
“The one that keeps on going back to the royal capital is the Wolf Witch’s clone. There’s no meaning in fighting if we don’t defeat the real body.”
“The time has come for us to defeat the Wolf Witch in the Man-Eating Forest.”
It was time to end the thousand years war. Now that we were all fired up, I decided to voice my suggestion.
“Umm, can I ask one more thing?”
“What is it?”
“Up until now, has the Fenrir Knight Squad ever asked any help from the Royal Knight to assist us in defeating the Wolf Witch?”
“Never, I think.”
I knew it. The Fenrir Knight never borrowed the Royal Knight’s power even once.
“If that’s the case then why don’t we ask the help of the Royal Knight to help us with the expedition to the Man-Eating Forest?”
Dietrich-sama and Gilbert-sama frowned, their expressions became grim.
It was understandable though. The Fenrir Knight had been fighting the Wolf Witch for a thousand years without the help of anyone else, only relying on their own power. At this late in the game, their pride might not allow them to accept the help of others but… Life was irreplaceable.
“Most probably, we will be outnumbered when we invade the Wolf Witch’s base. If that were to happen, I’m sure I will only become a hindrance instead.”
As I talked, my eyelids became hot. Unable to hold it any longer, my tears started to trickle down.
“I don’t want to see Dietrich-sama bleeding or Gilbert-sama being sad again. That’s why, please-”
The rest of my words were cut short as my tears kept on overflowing. Dietrich-sama then wiped the tears from my cheeks with his fingertip.
“Melodia, don’t cry. Please don’t cry.”
“I… We were wrong. Gilbert, this is not the time to keep being stubborn.”
“That’s true. Since we’ve come this far, I want to make this our last fight. We’re going to take all the precautions we can. We will lead our allies and fight.”
“Yeah. So that’s the conclusion, Melodia. Do you feel relieved now?”
I nodded very deeply at Dietrich-sama’s question.
