Chapter 2 – Healing? She’s an Expert!
Lin Banxia temporarily stored the luggage in her hand into the space and sped up, running toward the Gu Family residence.
At that very moment, in the Gu Family home—
Gu Honglang and Xu Minzhi had both been questioned by their superiors at work earlier that day. When they returned home, they found the house completely ransacked, as if bandits had raided the village.
After a thorough check, they discovered that all the family’s savings were gone. The bankbooks had been stolen as well, along with more than a dozen gold bars passed down from their ancestors.
“Did the authorities send someone to confiscate our property? Where’s Banxia? Could something have happened to her?” Xu Minzhi thought of Lin Banxia, their daughter-in-law.
Lin Banxia wasn’t exactly a good daughter-in-law. She had insisted on marrying their son and later refused to follow him to the army. But ultimately, this whole situation had dragged her into trouble because of their family.
Seeing that Xu Minzhi was still worrying about Lin Banxia at a time like this, Gu Honglang said angrily: “Minzhi, how can you still be worrying about her at this point? She was probably the one who stole the money! Those dozen or so gold bars were hidden so well—there’s no way even a search team could have found them. Only Lin Banxia knew! And the door lock is perfectly intact. If she didn’t have the key, how could she have gotten in?”
Back when Lin Banxia had just married into their family, thinking that they were all one family now, they had told her about the gold bars hidden in the house.
Their intention had been for those to go to Lin Banxia and Gu Shiqing after the two of them passed away. Who would have thought that Lin Banxia would take everything and run away at a time like this!
They had only been questioned so far; they hadn’t even been officially demoted or punished. Couldn’t she wait even a little longer?
Thinking of this, Gu Honglang was so furious that his heart felt like it might explode. His body swayed, and he nearly lost his balance.
He had been diagnosed with cerebral infarction[1]In simple terms, a cerebral infarction is when part of your brain dies because it doesn’t get enough blood and oxygen. It’s essentially a type of stroke caused by a blockage or narrowing … Continue reading a few years back.
Despite taking medicine all this time, there had been no improvement. He was already at retirement age and had been criticized in front of many juniors at work today. To come home and learn that Lin Banxia had run off—it made his head throb with excruciating pain.
“Honglang, what’s wrong with you?!” Xu Minzhi noticed something was off with Gu Honglang, and just as he collapsed, she quickly reached out to catch him.
She helped Gu Honglang onto the sofa, but he had already lost consciousness and was completely unresponsive.
Xu Minzhi wanted to call for help, but after just two steps, she felt dizzy herself.
Just as she was about to fall, Lin Banxia rushed over and caught her by the arm. “Mom, be careful!”
Xu Minzhi steadied herself and, seeing that it was actually Lin Banxia before her, the anger in her heart flared up again. Her tone was cold and sharp as she said: “What are you doing back here? Didn’t you take all the money and run off? Did you forget to take something valuable and come back for it? Our Gu Family doesn’t want a daughter-in-law like you!”
Xu Minzhi had always considered herself a good mother-in-law. Ever since Lin Banxia married into their family, she had helped her find a job through her connections, but Lin Banxia had complained it was too tiring and refused to go. Every day, all she did was go shopping and buy things. She didn’t even cook; Xu Minzhi had to make dinner herself after getting off work.
Even so, Xu Minzhi had never said anything.
She had no daughter, only a son, Gu Shiqing, so she naturally treated Lin Banxia like her own daughter and spoiled her.
But what did Lin Banxia give back in return?
If anyone had dared to speak to Lin Banxia like this under normal circumstances, she would have lashed out without hesitation.
But who told her to transmigrate here and become the vicious ex-wife Lin Banxia from the novel? She could only carry the blame for what the Original Owner had done.
“Mom, you’ve misunderstood. I never intended to run away.” Lin Banxia looked at the messy house, and without a change in expression, smoothly spun a fabricated story.
“I heard some rumors that something might happen to our family, and I was afraid that if the search team found anything unfavorable, it would be bad for us. So I hid the money and gold bars in advance.
Also, Mom, you can go check—those books and documents in Dad’s study are gone too. I heard that the authorities are strictly investigating the so-called ‘Great Poisonous Grass.’ I was afraid those things might be problematic if found, so I hid them as well.
It was all very rushed. I didn’t have time to tidy up the house. I planned to come back and clean up after everything was safely hidden. I just didn’t expect you both to return so soon.”
The original Lin Banxia had seen that Gu Honglang treasured those books and documents and assumed they were something valuable, so she had taken them too.
However, Chen Junming had scoffed at those tattered books, saying they were useless and took up space, and had discarded them along the way.
On her way back, Lin Banxia had picked them up again and stored them in her space.
Right now, no matter where those items were hidden, they would never be truly safe. Only within her space could they be protected from being found—completely secure.
Xu Minzhi was momentarily stunned by what Lin Banxia said.
The family’s books and documents were indeed gone. At the time, she had been furious and, coupled with her already poor impression of Lin Banxia, had firmly believed that Lin Banxia had run off with the money.
Now, hearing her explanation, it actually sounded quite reasonable.
Besides, if Lin Banxia had really intended to run away, why would she come back?
“All of this is true?” Xu Minzhi still couldn’t quite believe it.
Was this really something her daughter-in-law—who usually only knew how to shop and dress up—could have thought of and done?
Lin Banxia said: “Mom, if you don’t believe me, I can bring all those things back tomorrow and show you. But we have to dispose of them quickly. If they get discovered, it’ll be a big problem.”
Seeing how sincere and composed she seemed, Xu Minzhi couldn’t help but believe her.
With a slightly awkward expression, she said: “No need, Banxia. You’re right—at a time like this, those things are like hot potatoes. Who knows when the search team might come to raid the house—it’s better to hide them. You did very well this time. I misunderstood you earlier. I apologize.”
Despite being the elder, Xu Minzhi didn’t brush off the matter of apologizing. Her tone was earnest as she apologized to Lin Banxia.
Lin Banxia looked at the woman before her—middle-aged, scholarly in demeanor, and someone who had devoted her entire life to the country’s education system. In the original novel, Xu Minzhi had been devastated by the death of her husband Gu Honglang, fell into despair, and passed away not many years later.
As for the tragic and toxic story in the original text, she would be the one to rewrite it now.
Lin Banxia shook her head and said: “It’s nothing. I didn’t talk to you and Dad beforehand, so the misunderstanding is understandable.”
Mentioning Gu Honglang, Xu Minzhi quickly said: “That’s right, your dad fainted—we need to get him to the hospital quickly!”
Lin Banxia walked over to the sofa and placed her fingers on Gu Honglang’s wrist to check his pulse. She said: “At this time, the hospital is already closed. There’s nor doctors, only the night staff are still around. But Dad’s condition isn’t something they can handle. Even if we rush him to the hospital, he won’t get timely treatment. It’s better if I treat him myself.”
“You?” Xu Minzhi’s voice rose in disbelief. “Banxia, treating an illness isn’t something you can mess around with!”
