Chapter 6: Y3 Inhibitor
Ruan Yan went upstairs to say goodbye to his father before returning to school.
Federal A University…
One of the most prestigious universities in the Federation, but when it came to medical and genetic research, if A University ranked second, no one dared claim first.
By the time Ruan Yan arrived at the lab, only one figure remained inside—a slender and delicate silhouette, busy tinkering with glassware.
Hearing the door open, Yu Wan turned around and saw Ruan Yan. Without hesitation, she dropped what she was holding and ran over.
“A-Yan, you’re finally back!”
Ruan Yan picked up his personal white lab coat from the entrance and put it on.
A faint, sweet, and creamy scent drifted into his nose—it was Yu Wan’s pheromone.
He frowned slightly and reminded her, “A-Wan, your pheromones.”
Yu Wan had originally rushed over to check on Ruan Yan’s injury, but at his words, she immediately turned around, ran to her backpack, and pulled out a bottle that looked like perfume. She sprayed herself several times in a hurry.
Afterward, she turned back and asked, “Is it gone now?”
Ruan Yan shook his head.
Only then did Yu Wan let out a sigh of relief, patting her chest as she muttered, “Good thing it was you—I forgot to set a reminder for my suppressant’s duration.”
Usually, she set an alarm and would discreetly go somewhere secluded to reapply the suppressant when it went off.
Today, she had gotten caught up in a breakthrough in her experiment and had forgotten to set the alarm.
Ruan Yan nodded. He only regarded Yu Wan as a friend, unconcerned with gender distinctions. He pulled on his specialized gloves and said, “Show me the research report on the Y3 inhibitor.”
Yu Wan quickly dug through the very bottom of her bag, pulled out a document, and handed it to Ruan Yan.
Ruan Yan carefully read through the document while Yu Wan remained quietly by his side, not disturbing him.
He meticulously reviewed the report from start to finish before looking up at Yu Wan. His expression was gentle as he smiled and said, “You’ve worked hard this past month.”
Yu Wan was momentarily dazed. He had always considered himself among the top ranks of handsome men, but compared to Ruan Yan, he fell short—especially in terms of temperament.
Ruan Yan’s slender, well-defined fingers held the document, his gaze clear and focused. His nose was straight, lips slightly pursed. Even though they were both wearing the same standard white lab coat, his 1.8-meter frame made it look like high-end custom tailoring. His waist was slim, legs long and straight, and whether it was due to malnutrition or something else, he carried a certain youthful delicacy.
Sitting on a stool, Yu Wan propped his chin on his hand and mused, “A-Yan, if we weren’t such close brothers, I’d seriously consider just marrying you.”
Hearing this, Ruan Yan merely smiled.
He had actually caught faint traces of an Alpha’s pheromones on Yu Wan more than once—very subtle, only noticeable at close range.
At school, Yu Wan kept a deliberate distance from everyone except him, maintaining a careful boundary to conceal his identity as an Omega.
After his playful remark, Yu Wan’s expression turned serious. “I’m not the one who worked hard. The Y3 inhibitor was your idea. If we succeed, it’ll be a game-changer for countless Omegas across the Federation. Besides, you were the one who handled the initial research—I can’t take credit for it. I just ran some experimental tests. The final stage still depends on you.”
As he spoke, Yu Wan pulled a slip of paper from his bag and handed it to Ruan Yan. “Oh, right. This is the leave request I submitted to the professor on your behalf. I wasn’t sure when you’d be back, so I requested a full month. There’s still some time left on it, so you’ll have to go and cancel the rest yourself.”
Ruan Yan nodded and took the leave slip.
The two of them didn’t stay in the lab for long. After finishing their assigned experiments, they left together.
As they stepped out of the research building, a girl suddenly blocked their path.
Yu Wan crossed his arms and looked at the girl in front of them. She was clutching something in her hands, hesitating, as if mustering the courage to speak.
After a few seconds, she finally gathered her resolve, lowered her head, and held out an envelope toward Ruan Yan. Her lips moved slightly, as if she was about to say something.
This wasn’t the first time Ruan Yan had received such gestures, but right now, his entire focus was on the Y3 inhibitor research—he had no interest in romance.
Lifting his gaze slightly, he noticed a few students watching from a short distance away. He remained silent for two seconds before reaching out to take the envelope from her hands.
The girl’s eyes lit up with surprise, just as she was about to speak—
Ruan Yan, however, spoke first, cutting her off gently. “I appreciate your kindness, and I’m grateful for your feelings. But one day, you’ll find someone who likes you just as much as you like them.”
Hearing his rejection, the girl’s eyes turned red at the rims, but his soft tone prevented her from feeling too embarrassed.
By accepting her letter, he had given her feelings a proper conclusion, even if it was one without a beginning.
Lowering her head, she murmured, “Thank you, senior.”
After speaking, the girl turned and ran toward her friends in the distance.
Yu Wan vaguely overheard the nearby girls whispering.
“Even when rejecting someone, Senior Ruan is so gentle…”
“Don’t cry, sweetheart. At least he accepted the love letter you worked so hard on.”
Yu Wan glanced at Ruan Yan, who had walked a little ahead, then quickly caught up, unable to resist teasing him. “A-Yan, did you accept her letter just because you saw her friends in the distance and didn’t want to embarrass her?”
Ruan Yan lowered his gaze to the envelope in his hands, silently slipping it between the pages of his book.
After a few seconds, he gave a quiet “Mm.”
Yu Wan continued walking alongside him.
At school, Ruan Yan had very few people he could truly call friends—Yu Wan was probably the only one.
When he first met Ruan Yan, he had even thought Ruan Yan looked down on him. But after spending more time together, he realized that wasn’t the case. That was just Ruan Yan’s personality—distant and detached.
He seemed gentle and polite to everyone, yet there was always a vast, invisible chasm between him and others, an unspoken sense of aloofness.
And yet, plenty of Omegas still liked him. Not many, however, had the courage to confess.
Some had even approached Yu Wan before, asking him to help deliver their love letters to Ruan Yan. He had refused every time.
Tilting his head slightly in thought, Yu Wan mused—Ruan Yan was exactly the type of person who was effortlessly charming yet completely unaware of it.
He really couldn’t imagine what Ruan Yan would be like if he ever truly fell for someone.
After canceling his leave with his professor, Ruan Yan threw himself completely into his studies. He had expected Xiao Jin to contact him soon, yet more than half a month passed without any word from him.
Life returned to its usual rhythm, undisturbed. Ruan Yan found the peace quite enjoyable.
Gradually, he nearly forgot about the whole “lover” arrangement altogether.
