Chapter 16: Found the Little Gold Chain
Xi Youyou had just taken a walk around and now knew the general prices of vegetables.
After all, this was the 1980s—just a few yuan could support an ordinary family for a while, so vegetable prices were quite cheap.
A dime was enough to buy the basket of vegetables she had. It was a good deal.
“Alright!”
Xi Youyou immediately agreed. The two of them walked to a corner. The middle-aged woman checked the vegetables again, saw that there was no problem, and straightforwardly handed over a dime.
“Little girl, are you coming back to sell vegetables again?”
“Do you have a lot at home?”
The woman beamed. “I’ve got a sharp eye, you know. I can tell right away that your vegetables are fresh and high quality. I’d love to keep buying from you.”
This was the potential for a long-term deal.
“We actually do have quite a lot of vegetables at home. I might come often to sell them. Maybe I’ll even rent a stall here.”
“It’s just that I might not always be the one selling. Sometimes it could be someone else from my family. But with your sharp eye, Auntie, I’m sure you’ll recognize our vegetables, right?”
The woman’s impression of Xi Youyou improved even more seeing how cheerful and witty she was. “There’s no one else in this whole market with vegetables as good as yours. I’ll definitely recognize them. I’ll come find you again in a few days.”
With that, the woman laughed and walked away with her basket. She even bought a few potatoes on her way home.
With such fresh vegetables, her family would surely enjoy them.
Seeing that the vegetables in her basket were sold and she had earned a dime, Xi Youyou put a few more vegetables in her basket and wandered around the market a few more times.
Some people saw her and bought a bit as well.
In order not to draw too much attention, she only sold to five or six people and earned fifty cents before deciding to stop for the time being.
While circling the market earlier, she had noticed some empty stalls. Nearby stood a market administrator with a red armband on his sleeve.
Xi Youyou thought she could maybe start a little vegetable-selling business, so she went up to ask.
“Hello, I’d like to rent a stall like this. How does the rental work?”
“Ten yuan per month. Minimum rental period is one month.”
“If you’re thinking of renting, you’d better act fast. Lately, these stalls have been in high demand!”
The staff member deliberately said this, seeing that Xi Youyou was just a young girl.
“Alright.”
Xi Youyou nodded. She naturally understood the implication behind the administrator’s words but didn’t take it to heart. That was just part of doing business.
Who wouldn’t want to rent out all their stalls?
The rent wasn’t particularly expensive. The vegetables from her space grew continuously, and their maturity cycle was even shorter than those grown outside.
They were all irrigated with diluted spiritual spring water from her space, and when cooked into soup, the vegetables had a naturally sweet flavor.
If she could come and sell regularly, she would probably gain a stable group of customers. That would definitely be a good thing for her.
The only problem was that she didn’t currently have ten yuan on hand.
Xu Xiu had given her three yuan, which had to cover a few days’ worth of vegetable purchases. That still left her short.
She couldn’t just keep walking around with a basket to sell. The basket was small and couldn’t hold much. If the market staff noticed anything unusual, it would be a big problem.
Hmm…
Xi Youyou touched her chin and thought for a long time. Even the most skillful housewife couldn’t cook without rice.
But maybe she could go back and search around.
The Original Owner loved to spend money, but she was also very good at saving. It was just that those memories hadn’t transferred over into her own mind.
She would check again when she got home that night. The sooner she saved up enough money to rent a stall to sell vegetables, the better.
She needed to save money fast.
After earning fifty cents, Xi Youyou took some home-grown vegetables from her space, along with some preserved meat.
She also bought some maltose candies that the children loved and picked up a few seasonings before heading home.
By the time she got back, it was about time to cook. Xi Youyou headed into the kitchen to get busy, and Xu Xiu came over to help.
She casually mentioned the vegetable prices from that morning.
She reported the prices slightly lower than they actually were. Hearing this, Xu Xiu was pleasantly surprised. “I didn’t expect you to actually know how to bargain. You’re amazing!”
“You can take care of buying the vegetables for the next couple of days. If you ever can’t make it, just let me know.” Xu Xiu was now completely at ease with her.
Xi Youyou nodded and smiled as she cooked.
In her previous life, she had followed countless online tutorials to learn how to cook, so she was well-versed in how to make the most flavorful dishes with the smallest amount of meat.
The two little ones and Xu Xiu all ate heartily and kept praising her cooking.
After dinner, she played with the children for a while before slipping into her room to read.
She had been so lazy before. If she didn’t get a bit more diligent now, and actually passed the exam, they would definitely start to get suspicious.
Appearances had to be maintained.
The two little ones really did want to play with her, but when they saw she was going to study, they consciously refrained from bothering her. They sat outside, staring longingly in her direction.
In the end, it was Jiang Fenglin who couldn’t bear it anymore and took the two children out to play.
Xi Youyou stayed in the room for a while, then took a stroll through her space. There were still many things stored in her warehouse—vegetables, especially. Every so often, the space would automatically harvest the mature vegetables and move them into the warehouse.
The warehouse was huge, and could store almost anything.
There were indeed many good things in her space, but for now, it wasn’t wise to bring them out for sale.
After coming out of the space, she rummaged around inside the room. She hadn’t expected to find anything and even cursed the Original Owner in her heart for being such a squanderer.
How could she have wasted everything?
But to her surprise, the very next second, she opened the bottom drawer and discovered a small box. The moment she opened it, her mouth fell open in shock, her pupils dilating.
She had never expected that someone like the Original Owner, who loved to spend recklessly, would have actually kept the jewelry Jiang Cimo had once bought for her.
Inside the jewelry box was a gold ring, a pair of gold earrings, and a thin gold bracelet.
There was a gold shop in town where people could sell things they no longer wanted.
The gold ring and earrings both looked like they were worth a good deal. The gold bracelet was a bit thinner, and Xi Youyou stroked her chin in thought.
After all, they were things Jiang Cimo had bought for the Original Owner, so now they belonged to her. She decided to sell the gold bracelet.
Gold was quite valuable in this era.
Surely, it would sell for at least a month’s worth of rent for a stall.
With an investment, she could start generating income.
Yes, yes, yes!
Xi Youyou had made up her mind. She took the gold bracelet and slipped it into her pocket, then put the rest of the items back into the box and hid it carefully.
After all that was done, Xi Youyou finally lay down on the bed, happily thinking about how she would one day open her own independent Clinic. The thought filled her with joy.
She pretended to read for a while in the room, and when it was about time, she went out to make dinner.
After dinner, the two children sat in the main hall with the elders, watching television. Xi Youyou greeted them: “Mom, Dad, I’m going out for a run to get a bit of exercise. I’ve been reading too long during the day, and I feel a bit dizzy.”
“I’ll be back soon.”
The elderly couple didn’t think much of it and just reminded her to stay safe.
