Chapter 22: Calling the Police
When Lin Zhizhi woke up, it was already evening.
Outside the large floor-to-ceiling windows, the sky had not completely darkened, but the city lights were already glittering.
Neon lights flickered, towering buildings lined the horizon, and the streets were bustling with cars and people, filled with noise and excitement.
She had slept for so long that she felt a bit dazed upon waking. Rubbing her eyes with her hands, she gradually regained clarity.
Lin Zhizhi casually picked up her fully charged phone from the bedside and opened the surveillance footage to review the afternoon’s recordings. Upon seeing what had happened earlier, she let out a snort of disbelief.
She had just personally witnessed how shameless people in this world could be.
Especially Yang Ayi’s son—did he really have no sense of self-awareness? What dream was he having, thinking he could somehow “win” her over?
It was like narcissism itself opening the door for another narcissist — completely over the top.
No, calling him narcissistic would be an insult to the word narcissism.
This whole family was like an eighty-year-old woman drinking porridge — utterly shameless.
Lin Zhizhi no longer wanted to waste time entangling herself with this family. She had originally thought she had plenty of time to play along with them, but now she had changed her mind. The surveillance footage she had was more than enough to make them suffer the consequences.
Without hesitation, she exited the surveillance interface. With a calm and steady hand, she dialed three numbers on her phone — the emergency number. She explained her situation briefly and concisely before hanging up.
After ending the call, she changed her clothes, tidied herself up, and headed back to the scene to personally witness the four members of the Yang family being taken away.
At that moment, inside Lin Zhizhi’s house, the four members of the Yang family were enjoying a large delivery feast they had just ordered. They even had the audacity to take a bottle of expensive imported red wine from Lin Zhizhi’s private wine cabinet.
Mimicking what they had seen on TV, they plated the takeout food nicely on dishes, poured the red wine into tall glasses, and pretended to dine in a sophisticated manner.
When Lin Zhizhi entered the house with the police, this was the scene that greeted her.
One second, the Yang family was relishing their meal; the next, they were stunned as several police officers suddenly walked in, throwing them into a panic. Some jumped to their feet abruptly, while others froze in place.
They panicked even more when they saw Lin Zhizhi standing there.
One of the officers stepped forward, showed his badge to the four, and said: “Hello, we are police officers from the Phoenix Street Police Station in City A. We are here to perform our official duties. Please cooperate.”
After saying this, the other officers approached, ready to take the four members of the Yang family away.
Yang Ayi’s son shouted arrogantly: “Why are you arresting me? I didn’t break any laws! Let me go!”
Yang Ayi’s husband, with a pale face and trembling voice, stammered: “Y-Yeah… we didn’t break any laws…”
As they passed by Lin Zhizhi, Yang Ayi struggled to grab her, crying out anxiously: “Miss, please explain to them! Our family has always been honest and well-behaved!”
Lin Zhizhi looked at Yang Ayi’s face — the same kind, gentle appearance of a plump, middle-aged woman who seemed sincere and trustworthy.
No one would have suspected that she would attempt to steal from her employer. If Lin Zhizhi hadn’t grown suspicious and cautiously installed surveillance cameras, she might have been fooled by her forever.
“Yang Ayi.” Lin Zhizhi said calmly. “I’m still calling you ‘Yang Ayi’ out of respect, but I saw everything you and your family did in my house. Considering how you’ve taken care of me before, I advise you to be honest and cooperate with the police.”
After saying this, Lin Zhizhi got into her car and followed the police vehicle to the police station.
Once there, she provided a formal statement, handed over the surveillance footage, and asked a few follow-up questions before leaving the station.
By now, it was clear that the four members of the Yang family had stolen goods worth well over 2,000 yuan. Moreover, this wasn’t their first offense. The charge of theft against them was undeniable — it was now up to the court to determine the specific sentence.
Lin Zhizhi had no intention of ever seeing them again. She immediately made a call to Secretary Zhang, instructing him to send a lawyer from the Lin Corporation to handle the matter going forward.
