Chapter 37: Not Her
The vibration of the phone pulled Lu Yi back to reality. He unconsciously held his breath and quickly looked at the screen. Seeing the unfamiliar number displayed on the caller ID, his dark eyes dimmed.
It wasn’t her.
Lu Yi originally had no intention of answering the unknown call. At the beginning of the semester, someone in the dorm had given his number to some girls without his consent.
Because of that, he received dozens of calls from strangers in a single morning, sometimes even hundreds.
This even made Lu Yi wonder if he was the reincarnation of Tang Seng, with everyone wanting a bite of his flesh.[1]In Journey to the West, Tang Seng’s flesh was believed to grant immortality, making him a constant target for demons seeking to devour him. Later, he directly changed his number and made it clear to his roommates not to give it out carelessly, especially to girls. Only then did the constant ringing and vibrating of his phone finally quiet down. But even so, there were still occasional calls from unknown girls.
Lu Yi was about to hang up but hesitated. What if this time, it was her?
He had called Zhizhi several times, but she never picked up, and she hadn’t returned either. Maybe her phone was out of battery and had shut off, or…
No, he couldn’t keep thinking like this.
But Zhizhi was so delicate, with thin arms and legs, as if a single push would make her fall.
If the bystanders who had witnessed Lin Zhizhi subduing a thug had heard this, they would have collectively rolled their eyes at Lu Yi to show him just how wrong he was.
Thinking of this, Lu Yi quickly answered the call. As the voice on the other end spoke, his expression grew colder, his thin lips pressing into a tight line.
The next moment, he grabbed his phone in one hand, opened the car door with the other, and swiftly started the engine, speeding off into the night.
After cooperating with the police to complete their statements, Lin Zhizhi and Zhou Tiantian were ready to leave. However, the officer was concerned about the safety of two young girls going home alone so late at night and offered to personally escort them.
Not wanting to trouble the police, Lin Zhizhi was about to decline when, coincidentally, a group of drunken men started a fight.
Neither side was willing to back down, and with the police station short on manpower, the officer who had offered to take them home could no longer insist. Instead, he advised them to call a family member or friend to come pick them up.
Zhou Tiantian didn’t want to worry her parents. After all, Father Zhou and Mother Zhou were already devastated by their company’s bankruptcy, especially Father Zhou—half a lifetime of effort gone just like that.
So, Lin Zhizhi thought of Lu Yi. When she opened her phone, she realized he had called her more than ten times intermittently. She quickly called him back and explained the situation.
But all she got in response was Lu Yi’s cold voice: “Wait there. I’m coming.”
Lin Zhizhi stared blankly at the hung-up call and let out a small, dissatisfied hum.
Damn man, his girlfriend was in the police station, yet he still acted so cold.
Hearing this, Zhou Tiantian quickly asked: “What’s wrong? Is your friend unavailable? I can ask my colleague to come instead.”
“No, no, he has time. He’s coming now. Let’s wait a bit.”
While Lin Zhizhi was making the call, Zhou Tiantian had gone to get some warm water. She handed the paper cup filled with warm water to Lin Zhizhi and said gently: “Here, drink some warm water to soothe your throat.”
Lin Zhizhi took the cup and finished it in a few gulps. She had moved around a lot earlier and was indeed feeling thirsty.
As she put down the cup, something suddenly came to her mind, making her body freeze instantly. Her heart skipped a beat.
Crap. She was still pregnant.
And she had just moved around so much…
Panic surged through Lin Zhizhi, and she barely registered Zhou Tiantian asking if she wanted more water. She just responded with vague hums while quickly unlocking her phone and searching online.
She carefully checked the symptoms one by one:
Bleeding? No, no.
Abdominal pain? No, no.
…
For pregnancies at one month, some women might not experience any reactions even after intense movement. Judging by her current state, she seemed to be one of them.
But just to be safe, she still needed to go to the hospital for a proper check-up. It was already over a month—she should be getting a check-up anyway.
Just as Lin Zhizhi felt relieved, she looked up and saw Lu Yi had arrived.
He stepped into the room, walking against the light. The glow fell on his fair skin, making the sharp contours of his face stand out.
His deep, dark eyes carried an unfathomable intensity, and his thin lips were pressed tightly together. Dressed in simple black clothing, his tall and slender figure exuded an extraordinary presence.
But at this moment, Lu Yi was holding a plastic bag in his right hand—something that didn’t quite match his overall aura.
