But Lin Rong did not back down and directly fought back. Initially, the people around didn’t take it seriously, thinking the two guys had hot tempers. It wasn’t until Zhou Chungeng and Lin Rong got angry and grabbed sickles…
This was the last time for harvesting rice. The sickle was a farming tool, and he picked it up, looking like he was about to hit someone with it.
But the sickle was sharpened to a very sharp point. If someone was hit with it, it would definitely cause a serious injury. Pei Zhong, who was nearby picking grass, heard them arguing. He thought they were fighting about his daughter-in-law’s medical skills and was worried something bad might happen, so he rushed over to stop them.
Unexpectedly, the two young men accidentally hit Pei Zhong with such force that he fell down a slope. The sickle fell with him, and he hurt his leg.
Seeing the blood finally calmed the two men down.
The captain came to handle the situation. He first asked someone to take Pei Zhong back home and then called the two young men to the brigade headquarters and scolded them, demanding that they apologize.
The gifts they brought were meat, money, and tickets. But since the Pei family had no adults at home, they didn’t deliver them. Now that they saw smoke coming out of the kitchen, they hurried over.
Both of them had bruises all over their faces and knew they had caused a big problem. They lowered their heads and whispered, “Auntie, we really didn’t mean it. Please accept this!”
“Auntie, we’re so sorry…”
Even though they didn’t get along well, they didn’t want to involve others, especially an old man, so their apologies were particularly sincere.
Mother Pei didn’t like the two who had caused her husband so much trouble, but she couldn’t just forgive them because the injury was accidental. So she reluctantly accepted the gifts and immediately told them to leave: “Alright, now go.”
The two didn’t expect it to be so easy and asked the captain for help, feeling guilty.
Pei Shengcai, not wanting to say anything more, said harshly, “Alright, get out of here.”
Seeing this, the two of them quickly ran away.
At the gate of the courtyard, they bumped into each other and almost started fighting again. Pei Sheng was so angry that he ran over and kicked each of them, making them stagger. Then he came back and asked Pei Zhong if he needed any help.
Mother Pei was still upset and didn’t want to say much. She just said, “It’s nothing. The third boss and his comrades came to see him. They just helped us handle it. It’s nothing.”
Pei Sheng finally sighed in relief, then went forward to greet Xiang Yiyang and Shi Zhonghua before leaving.

After everyone left, Pei Deming, who had been waiting for a long time, quickly asked, “Mom, Dad is being taken care of by the second son, so I won’t go over right now. Otherwise, we’ll lose two people’s work points, and it’s not worth it.”
Mother Pei’s face became more and more unpleasant, and she said coldly, “I didn’t ask you to go.”
Pei Deming laughed awkwardly. He was the biological son and had the duty to show respect and care for his parents. He felt guilty for not doing so, so he nodded to the two people standing at the main room’s door and was about to leave.
However, his three children surrounded Mother Pei and asked about Pei Zhong’s condition with concern.
But Xu Cui pulled him aside and motioned him to look into the main room.
Pei Deming, following her gesture, saw the pile of gifts on the table in the main hall. His eyebrows jumped, and he quickly said, “Mom, the third comrade came and brought a lot of things, right?”
This third brother is really enviable. Despite everything, Jiang Xi decided to marry him, and his comrades even brought him gifts. How can ordinary people get so many gifts? At a glance, he even seemed to have seen a leg of lamb!
Mother Pei was in a slightly better mood. When she heard this, she picked up the broom beside the kitchen door and hit them: “Get out! All these are for the third child. What does it matter to you how much there is!”
Pei Deming was startled. He didn’t expect his mother to be so irritable. After being hit twice, he explained, “I’m just asking. Besides, gifts must be reciprocated. Aren’t you going to repay them later?”
“I won’t repay them. Are these small streams enough?” Mother Pei said with a stern face, “If you had paid more attention to your father, I wouldn’t be so angry. Why haven’t you asked me if there is enough money at home or if your father needs anything?”
Pei Deming’s face turned red, and he couldn’t argue back.
He had waited until now to come because he didn’t want to delay his work. After he arrived, he only mentioned it briefly and didn’t ask for more details. He just didn’t want to be asked to help take care of his father.
So he accepted Mother Pei’s scolding without a word.
But Xu Cui didn’t think the same. She was angry that her husband was being scolded for saying just one thing. Why?
She was furious and said angrily, “Mom, that’s not what I meant. You know our family situation. We only have a little money, not much. The third child is different. He can just rest and have someone take care of him. He can even get a pension. Jiang Xi now has an income, so why would they need us? We were separated from them a long time ago.”
“Mother…” Their eldest daughter Chunhong blushed when she saw her mother say this and couldn’t help but pull her: “Don’t say that.”
Xu Cui then calmed down a bit, but her face was still full of anger.
“You!” Mother Pei was furious. She was so angry that her body was shaking, and her vision blurred.
Jiang Xi hurried out of the kitchen, supported her, and pinched her philtrum with one hand: “Mom, don’t be angry. Calm down…”
There had been too much stress today. Mother Pei wasn’t young anymore and had many health issues from years of hard work. If she got too stressed a few more times, something might really happen.
Mother Pei, being supported by Jiang Xi and seeing her worried expression, felt a bit comforted and wasn’t as angry.
Xiang Yiyang and Shi Zhonghua both looked unhappy, but this was Pei family’s matter, and it was hard for them as outsiders to intervene, so they helped support Mother Pei into the house.
Jiang Xi freed her hands and looked at Pei Deming’s family.
Xu Cui puffed out her chest, put her hands on her hips, and glared at her, not feeling she was wrong at all.
Pei Deming had a dark face and looked very angry.
However, his three children were more or less ashamed and avoided Jiang Xi’s gaze.
Jiang Xi said coldly, “Brother, I hope you understand that even if the family is separated, the fact that your parents gave birth to you and raised you doesn’t change. The gift for your wife was still given by them. If you are so ungrateful, be careful that your children will follow your example in the future.”
Pei Deming’s face changed drastically, and he glared at her.
Xu Cui shouted angrily, “Shut up!”
Jiang Xi sneered and ignored them.
The two adults gritted their teeth, but knowing they were in the wrong, they didn’t argue further and quickly said with stern faces, “Let’s go back!”
Just as they reached the entrance of the yard, a man with a pale face, holding two packets of medicine, rushed past them, entered the house, grabbed Jiang Xi, and said, “Doctor Jiang, I don’t want this medicine anymore, give me my money back!”
Jiang Xi frowned, “Are you sure? If you stop taking the medicine, you’ll continue to be constipated, and it might get worse. The cancer I mentioned isn’t impossible.”
Zhou Baoquan, now angry, said, “How do I know if you’re lying? You said there’s something growing in my stomach, but is there? I’ve been taking medicine for three months, each dose costing 80 cents. In three months, I’ve spent dozens of yuan!”
Jiang Xi’s expression hardened as she simply nodded, “Fine, I’ve said what I needed to say. If you don’t believe me, that’s up to you. I’ll refund you 1.6 yuan for these two packets of medicine.”
“No!” Zhou Baoquan shook his head, as if afraid of being cheated, “Your medicine is useless. You need to refund the money for all three packs.”
Jiang Xi laughed in anger. Since her reputation had grown, no one had treated her like this, especially someone who used her medicine and then demanded a refund. She said coldly, “This medicine was for your symptoms. It’s not for you to decide whether it works. I didn’t lie to you. You boiled the medicine, so I can’t take it back, and I can’t refund your money. You can’t make a profit out of medical treatment like this. Also, if you return the medicine, don’t come to see me in the future. I can’t afford such a loss.”
She couldn’t set this precedent, or others might start causing trouble.
But Zhou Baoquan didn’t see it that way. Seeing that she was unwilling and even threatened him, he grew angrier and kept accusing her, “How can you say you didn’t lie? I’m already better, but you made me take medicine for so long. What was the point? You just wanted my money! Otherwise, why would a woman like you be willing to look at a man’s butt?”
The more Zhou Baoquan talked, the more convinced he became of his own suspicion. He suddenly realized, “You must have thought I was embarrassed to talk about my illness, so you tricked me!”
Xu Cui took a deep breath and shouted, “Sister-in-law, are you looking at man’s butt?!”
