Chapter 27
“Su Xi, I have your letter, and I have brought it over for you.”
In May 1965, in the province of G, the sunshine was bright, carrying with it a hint of early summer fragrance.
Wu Fangfang, holding a letter, bounced to the dormitory where Su Xi was packing her things and handed them to her.
Su Xi looked up from a pile of clothes and took the letter. It was sent by her friend, Lingling. She smiled and said, “Thanks!”
Wu Fangfang waved her hand, busy opening her own envelope. “There’s no need to thank me. It’s on my way.”
After quickly reading her own letter, Wu Fangfang looked up to find Su Xi still packing. She put away her letter and walked over to help fold the clothes, asking, “Whose letter is it? Why don’t you read it now?”
Su Xi replied, “It should be from Lingling. I’ll read it later. First, let me pack my things. Qingqing borrowed a tricycle, and I’m catching a ride with her.” Qingqing was another girl in the dormitory.
Graduation season was approaching, and economically well-off students would mail unimportant belongings back home to avoid the difficulty of carrying everything when they left.
Hearing this, Wu Fangfang sped up her action: “Then hurry up. I’ll help you organize. At times like these, you realize it’s nice to have your family nearby.”
Su Xi chuckled. “Indeed. You’re getting married to the class monitor after graduation, aren’t you?”
Wu Fangfang blushed but still nodded generously. “Speaking of which, we’ve been so smooth sailing, thanks to you and Lingling.”
Su Xi knew what Wu Fangfang was referring to but didn’t feel she had anything to do with it. “Thank me for what? You two deserve all the happiness yourselves.”
Wu Fangfang neatly packed the folded clothes into a cloth bag and pressed it down firmly. “Of course, we have to thank you. If it weren’t for the thank-you letter and the newspaper publication by Shi Lingling’s family last year, which was so grand, with my and Hongbing’s grades, we wouldn’t have been able to enter the list of students that can go to the hospital they wanted to go to. Unlike you, an outstanding student, hospitals were competing to have you.”
Su Xi felt a bit embarrassed by her praise. While her current excellence couldn’t be denied due to her efforts, she also couldn’t ignore the fact that she had benefited from studying medicine in a previous life, a level of medical expertise far beyond the present.
However, speaking of last year with Shi Lingling, it’s really sad whenever she remembers what happened.
Regarding Shi Lingling’s engagement to Yan An, it was arranged by their grandfathers’ generation.
The two grandfathers attended the same school and passed the imperial examinations together, fostering a deep friendship. They anticipated advancing together in their careers, with mutual assistance in the officialdom. Unfortunately, the imperial examinations were canceled.
Nonetheless, the two grandfathers were opportunistic. They made an agreement to have their respective younger generations marry so that they could become in-laws.
Unfortunately, both grandfathers had several sons but not a single daughter.
Later, both families prospered—one in the military and the other in politics. This further fueled their desire to become one family, stubbornly insisting on the younger generation fulfilling this arranged marriage.
Unluckily, the grandchildren were all boys, and when Shi Lingling was finally born after much anticipation, the youngest grandson of the Yan family was already six years older than her.
Despite this, the two grandfathers who wanted to become in-laws were overjoyed. They didn’t care whether their sons and daughters-in-law agreed or not, directly finalizing this arranged marriage.
Six months after Yan An and Shi Lingling’s engagement, Shi Lingling’s uncle also welcomed a baby girl.
Even though Uncle Shi also wanted to become in-laws with the Yan family, there were no suitable boys of the right age in the Yan family.
This arrangement meant nothing.
The problem arose when Shi Lingling’s cousin, Shi Wanyan, also liked Yan An. Just because she was born six months later than her cousin, she had no part in this engagement. How could she accept this?
Compared to the obedient, gentle, and academically successful Shi Lingling, Shi Wanyan enjoyed being admired by boys from a young age. After finishing primary school, she cried and refused to continue her education.
As she grew older and wanted to marry into a good family, she couldn’t find a boy better than Yan An, who had a better family background.
So, watching Shi Lingling’s shy and soon-to-be-married appearance, she exploded.
In her eyes, as long as Shi Lingling was out of the picture, she would be the only girl in the Shi family. Naturally, the engagement would fall to her.
So, she found Hu Ge, whom she knew who dealt with her type of request, and gave him some money to kill Shi Lingling.
During the transaction, Shi Wanyan remembered Shi Lingling, who had always been more outstanding and likable than her from childhood to adulthood. Envy blinded her conscience, and mere murder couldn’t satisfy her grudges. So, she added fifty more dollars, asking the kidnappers to rape her before killing her.
She was truly malicious.
Shi Wanyan never considered that someone like her would never be considered by the Yan family, even if it meant ruining the engagement.
Yan An’s sister was also deliberately misled by Shi Wanyan, which led to her misunderstanding that Shi Lingling had eloped with her lover.
At that time, the investigation caused a stir in the entire Shi family. No matter how much the Shi family’s third uncle pleaded, Shi Weiguo insisted on sending Shi Wanyan to prison.
Even attempted murder would be enough for her to spend several decades behind bars.
It was a family scandal, but Shi Lingling truly liked Su Xi. So, she wrote a letter to Su Xi explaining the ins and outs of the situation.
But do you really have to go to the island? With your grades, you could choose any nationally renowned military hospital. You can’t just go to their island because you’re close to Shi Lingling, right? I heard those places; even buying something requires a few hours on a boat.” Wu Fangfang tied up a bag of clothes and then opened another cloth bundle to start packing. Reflecting on the past few years, she then added, “Su Xi, you’ve really accumulated quite a bit of clothing.”
Su Xi placed the books she had bought between layers of clothes, making them less susceptible to damage. “It’s not entirely for Shi Lingling. It’s really a fate. My brother and Shi Lingling are on the same island. This year, my eldest brother was also transferred to their hospital. He even brought our grandmother there. I definitely want to be with my family. Besides, doctors are the same everywhere.”
Of course, what Su Xi didn’t mention was that ten years were approaching. Even though their family was influential and professional, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Nowhere is safer than the military base, especially on the isolated island. How to endure these ten years, they can think about it later.
Moreover, the situations of her Brother Nannan and her eldest brother are special. In case someone with ill intentions targets them, regardless of their family’s background, it would be in vain.
So, since last year, Su Xi has been continuously writing letters to her brother, urging him to find a way to get their eldest brother transferred to their island as a doctor.
Although the eldest brother did not graduate from the Military Medical Academy, he still graduated from one of the top medical schools in the country. He voluntarily applied to be stationed on the island, which the military really lacks, given the scarcity of medical personnel in this era.
Upon further investigation, it turned out his parents were both martyrs, and his father had even reached the rank of a division commander. What was even more admirable was that all the children in their family were university graduates, causing no trouble for the organization.
The higher-ups slammed the table in approval! This had to be approved!
So, at the beginning of this year, Su Dong, who had already become the director of the county hospital, received orders to transfer to the military base.
Although many people in the hospital were puzzled as to why the director of a good county hospital would choose to leave for an unknown island, they had no choice but to let him go.
Only Su Xi secretly speculated—perhaps the eldest brother was bringing his “darling wife” along with him!~~
Ripples~~
“You’re right, there’s nothing more important than family. Congratulations in advance on your smooth work.” After packing up their belongings, Wu Fangfang and Su Xi each carried a large bag, heading downstairs to wait for the tricycle.
