Chapter 29
From the place of disembarkation to the family courtyard, Su Xi walked for nearly an hour.
As she arrived at the gate of the yard assigned to her Brother, carrying a rattan box, she didn’t even have time to knock on the door.
The courtyard door had already been opened from the inside, and Su Xi instinctively put on a smile, unsurprisingly locking eyes with Chen Xiangyun, who was preparing to harvest leeks in the vegetable garden.
Her Grandma wore a straw hat on her head with a bamboo basket hanging from her hand. She stood there, staring blankly at her granddaughter at the door, seemingly a bit stunned.
It wasn’t until her granddaughter hugged her with a smile that Grandma burst into tears.
Chen Xiangyun, both surprised and delighted, had tears streaming down his face. She didn’t care about the indigo cloth in her hand. She tossed it to the ground, grabbed her granddaughter’s freed hand tightly, and pulled her inside the house.
“You, naughty girl, why didn’t you let your brother pick you up when you arrived? How did you arrive here?” She cried and laughed for a few minutes.
Chen Xiangyun finally snapped out of the joy of seeing her granddaughter when Su Xi pretended to dodge Grandma’s slaps in pain. She patted Su Xi’s arm with her hands and said, “This child is getting bolder. In such a remote place, she came alone, not afraid of getting lost.”
Su Xi, pretending to be in pain, dodged Grandma’s slaps with a sweet and sincere smile. Her deep black eyes sparkled as if filled with dazzling starlight.
After experiencing years of separation, she could finally live with her family now. How could she not be happy?
But there were more important things to do now. Su Xi raised her hand to wipe away her Grandma’s tears. “Grandma, I’ll go report first. We can chat when I come back. There are two soldiers outside waiting for me; they won’t come in to rest.”
Upon hearing this, Chen Xiangyun stopped crying, casually wiped away her tears, and urged her. “Why didn’t you say so earlier? Hurry up; don’t delay their work. When you come back, Grandma will cook something delicious for you.”
Su Xi pouted and ordered, “Grandma, I want to eat the pancakes you make, preferably with rolled potato strips and eggs.”
Grandma chuckled with narrowed eyes. “Alright! Alright! I’ll make them for you, and I’ll add some minced meat inside.”
After saying that, as if remembering something, she quickly ran back into the house, leaving behind only a sentence: “Wait for me for two minutes.”
Su Xi didn’t know why her grandma went back inside, so she kept herself busy by opening a rattan box and taking out two small bags of dried fruits she bought from G Province.
She planned to give them to the little soldiers who would come to visit her later, as a thoughtful gesture.
After she closed the box, Grandma also walked out of the room, carrying some candies in her hands.
Su Xi understood and placed the dried fruits she had in Grandma’s bag, waiting for Grandma to distribute them to the young soldiers.
After some pushing and blocking, but in the end, Grandma undoubtedly emerged victorious.
In these times of scarcity, candies were a rare treat.
The young soldiers were only sixteen or seventeen years old, and still considered half-grown kids. Unable to resist, they reluctantly and happily accepted a bag of delicious treats.
Then Su Xi accompanied them to Secretary Wang’s office, taking three steps forward and turning back only once.
Meanwhile, Grandma watched her granddaughter walk away and then happily walked with a basket, heading towards the vegetable plot that belonged to their family.
Upon reaching the vegetable plot, she saw several military wives already picking vegetables in the field.
Although Grandma Chen Xiangyun had only been here for half a year and was a rural grandmother, her amiable temperament, cleanliness, and exceptional cooking skills earned her good popularity here.
Of course, the most crucial reason was that she had two talented and handsome grandsons, both of whom are still single.
Who on the island didn’t know these two promising and handsome young men, especially Su Dong, the elder brother, with his heavenly looks as if a celestial had descended to the mortal world?
Tsk tsk tsk, the unmarried girls and young wives on this island, upon seeing Doctor Su Dong, couldn’t move their legs.
There were numerous young ladies aspiring to become Chen Xiangyun’s daughter-in-law, but the exact count was unknown.
As soon as Chen Xiangyun arrived on their side, several military wives greeted her with smiles. One slightly older military wife laughed and said, “Oh, Aunt Chen, you seem to be in such a good mood today. I haven’t seen that smile fade.”
Chen Xiangyun felt delighted and wanted to share the news. Without hiding anything back, she said, “Ah! My granddaughter has come to the island. I am so happy.”
The group of women listened attentively, and Wu, the sister-in-law who had asked the initial question, brightened up. Her house was next to Chen Xiangyun’s.
During the last chat, Chen Xiangyun accidentally mentioned that she also had a granddaughter who was studying in G Province as a graduate student.
Later, when she asked Old Wu about their family, she learned that graduate students were more knowledgeable than undergraduates.
Thinking of this, Aunt Wu slapped her thigh, and her round face was full of envy. “Ah, Aunt Chen, your granddaughter is the one studying for a master’s, right? Is she here for a summer vacation?”
Aunt Wu is outgoing and has a loud voice. With her loud voice, several nearby military wives in the fields looked over.
Curious ones directly asked, and after Aunt Wu’s explanation, everyone looked at Chen Xiangyun with envy. Another sister-in-law, Chen, smiled and asked, “Aunt Chen, about your granddaughter? Why don’t you bring her out for us to see?”
“Yeah, Aunt Chen, let us have a look at how your child is raised; all of them are impressive.”
“Indeed, Aunt Chen, is your granddaughter here for the summer?”
Chen Xiangyun picked a few cucumbers and put them in a basket to take home for Su Xisheng to eat. Her daughter loved these fruits and vegetables.
Hearing the questions, she looked up and cheerfully said, “No, Xixi graduated this year. She came to work on the island. She’s reporting to Secretary Wang now. You’ll have a chance to meet her in the future.”
Aunt Wu had already picked up the vegetables she needed and stood on the edge of the field, waiting for Chen Xiangyun. Hearing this, she exclaimed, “Oh, it’s so coincidental that she ended up on our island! I remember your daughter is only 20 years old, right? A 20-year-old doctor, oh, that’s impressive!”
Aunt Wu couldn’t help but feel emotional. She also had children; the eldest was already 26, and the youngest was 18. Except for the youngest daughter, the rest were boys.
None of these little rascals had found a partner. Though she envied others for having granddaughters, she had a sense of self-awareness. Given Doctor Su Dong’s appearance, he will probably also be very beautiful. Even if she became unattractive, considering her young age, she was quite impressive. It’s not that she was belittling her own children; rather, she clearly saw the gap between her kids and the impressive Su family.
With clear-minded people like Aunt Wu, there were naturally those whose minds were not so clear-minded. They believed their nephews were also outstanding.
Among them were two sisters-in-law who had mentally paired up suitable boys from their family.
As for whether the Su family would agree, in their eyes, it was not a concern. No matter how outstanding a woman is, she still needs to get married, especially one who excels in household chores.
Moreover, their family had city household registration and a complete set of qualifications. If someone chose an orphan like her, it would be a great fortune. She had no reason to decline as a young girl.
Gossip is human nature.
When Su Xi finished reporting to Secretary Wang and returned home, as soon as she stepped into the courtyard, she met seven or eight hot gazes.
She instinctively paused, feeling a bit hesitant. Could she have entered the wrong yard?
This unreliable thought only lasted for a moment. Su Xi was sure she was in the right place.
Coincidentally, Grandma Chen also came out of the kitchen carrying brown sugar water.
Seeing her granddaughter return, Chen Xiangyun smiled and waved, “Xixi, come quickly; accompany Grandma to serve brown sugar water.”
Su Xi hesitated, smiled at the hot gazes of the aunts, and followed her grandmother into the kitchen.
Once the grandmother and granddaughter left, the place exploded!
“Oh, my goodness!”
“I thought Doctor Su Dong was already a celestial being, but unexpectedly, his sister is also so beautiful. She doesn’t look any worse than her brother. I wonder how their parents managed to have such good-looking children.”
“Exactly! Look at my three kids. Normally, I think they’re decent, but compared to the Su siblings, I can’t even look at my three ugly kids anymore.”
“Oh, this girl is beautiful, so beautiful! In all my years, I haven’t seen a girl this good-looking.”
“This is a big deal now. The boys on the whole island will be walking on air… hahaha.”
She decided it was better not to go out to fetch water. She clasped her hands together, gesturing to Grandma in a plea for mercy. ‘Thank you for your hard work, Grandma.’
It wasn’t because she was shy; mainly, she felt a bit overwhelmed. These aunts were too chatty. Let her avoid the limelight for a bit.
Thankfully, she will start working tomorrow!
