19: Can I kiss you?

As Ji Canghai lowered his body and pressed closer, Ling Yunfan finally realized, Holy shit, is he going to kiss me?

Am i getting old, my eyesight must be failing—what on earth is happening?

Before Ling Yunfan could even process the thought, his body had already reacted. He instinctively reached out and pressed down on Ji Canghai’s shoulder, stopping him from getting any closer.

Ji Canghai’s body jerked. He had expected this response, but a hint of disappointment flashed through his eyes nonetheless. He chuckled lightly and straightened up. “Alright, no more fooling around. You can sleep in the master bedroom and I’ll take the guest room. Now go get some rest.”

Seeing Ji Canghai move away from the edge of the sofa, Ling Yunfan secretly breathed a sigh of relief and sat up. “Should I really sleep in the master bedroom? I can sleep in the guest room.”

Ji Canghai picked up the empty wine glass from the coffee table and walked towards the kitchen. “This is our home, what’s the problem with you sleeping in the master bedroom?” he said, before disappearing into the kitchen without giving Ling Yunfan a chance to reply.

When Ji Canghai returned to the living room after washing the glass, he found that the sofa was empty.

Ji Canghai’s eyes darkened and his breathing grew heavier. He quickly strode towards the master bedroom.

The bedroom was dark, with the door tightly shut. Looking through the crack, all he could see was darkness. Ji Canghai rushed up to the door and twisted the handle with force, making a loud sound that startled Ling Yunfan, who had just closed his eyes to go to sleep.

Ling Yunfan looked towards the door, but with the darkness, he could only see Ji Canghai’s silhouette. “What’s wrong?” he asked.

Ji Canghai, whose muscles were tense all over, immediately relaxed upon hearing Ling Yunfan’s voice. He let out a sigh of relief and spoke gently, “Is there anything uncomfortable about the blankets and pillows?”

Ling Yunfan felt inexplicable, “No, why would there be anything uncomfortable?”

He couldn’t have turned into a princess and the hospital didn’t notify him either.

Ji Canghai smiled lightly, “That’s good. Good night.”

“Okay.” Ling Yunfan yawned, “Good night.”

Ji Canghai left the room and closed the door.

He stood quietly outside the room for a moment, wanting to hear the gradually prolonged breathing of the person inside due to fatigue, but unfortunately, besides the sticky darkness that came from all directions, he couldn’t feel anything.

Ji Canghai left the master bedroom door quietly, walked to the entrance door, locked it, and went to the guest bedroom with peace of mind.

The next day, Ling Yunfan woke up from his sleep and was stunned for a while.

Everything around him made him feel unfamiliar.

It was not the hard and stiff wooden bed, but a soft and comfortable mattress; not the moldy and crumbling gray walls, but clean and flawless white walls. The air was not sour and damp, but extremely fresh.

Ling Yunfan took a deep breath and remembered his heavy debts, and sighed deeply again.

He sat up and stretched lazily.

At the same time, the room door was lightly knocked and Ji Canghai’s voice came, “Yunfan, are you awake?”

Ling Yunfan rubbed his neck, thinking, Wow, this address really makes my heart skip a beat for a second.

Ling Yunfan shouted at the door, “Wake up.”

Ji Canghai asked, “Can I come in?”

“Sure, come in,” Ling Yunfan replied.

With a slight click, Ji Canghai pushed the door open. He was wearing a white tailored suit that fit him perfectly, accentuating his slim waist and elegant posture. Ji Canghai walked to the window, pulled open the curtain, and the morning sun shone through the clear window, dancing between his handsome eyebrows.

“Did you sleep well last night?” Ji Canghai asked with a smile.

Ling Yunfan patted the soft and luxurious silk bedding and thought to himself that he dare not say anything negative. This expensive four-piece silk set could make someone go crazy and jump up to beat him if he said anything wrong. So Ling Yunfan said, “Very well, extremely well, couldn’t be better.”

Ji Canghai said, “Breakfast is on the table. I’m sorry I can’t eat with you. I have to go to work. Remember to eat after you freshen up.”

“What?” Ling Yunfan was surprised. “Have you eaten already? You’re going to work so early?”

Ji Canghai lowered his gaze and said, “Yes, I’ve eaten. Oh, by the way, I was worried that you would be bored resting at home alone, so I prepared a few books for you.”

As he spoke, Ji Canghai went out and brought back a set of books, gently placing them in Ling Yunfan’s arms.

Ling Yunfan picked them up and looked at them, “Children’s pre-school reading, complete pinyin guide, and picture cards for 3-6-year-old babies.”

Ling Yunfan, “…”

Ji Canghai said lovingly, “You’ve lost your memory.”

Ling Yunfan, “I have amnesia, but I’m not dumb! Didn’t the doctor test me when I was in the hospital?”

Ji Canghai opened the “Learn to Read” book and pointed to two characters, “How do you read these two characters?”

Ling Yunfan, “Baby.”

Ji Canghai, “Hmm.”

Ling Yunfan, “……?”

Ji Canghai had a calm expression and calmly put away the book. “I’ll get you some other books.”

Ling Yunfan had a reasonable suspicion that Ji Canghai did it on purpose.

Ji Canghai put away the children’s books and brought in a few more books, which surprised Ling Yunfan.

They were programming books related to his college major and a new science fiction novel by an author he liked very much.

Is it a coincidence or intentional?

Ling Yunfan didn’t dare ask Ji Canghai for fear of exposing the fact that he hadn’t really lost his memory.

Ji Canghai kindly asked, “Are these books okay?”

“They’re fine, thank you,” Ling Yunfan nodded.

Ji Canghai then handed Ling Yunfan a brand new phone, “Your phone is broken, so I got you a new one. Do you remember how to use it?”

“I remember,” Ling Yunfan replied.

“Okay,” Ji Canghai smiled his usual smile, “I have to go to work now. You stay at home and rest well.”

Ling Yunfan was playing with his new phone, casually saying, “Be careful on the way and come back early,” when he felt someone’s shadow fall in front of him. He raised his head, puzzled, and met Ji Canghai’s intense gaze.

Ling Yunfan asked, “What’s wrong?”

Ji Canghai asked, “Can you say that again?”

“Huh?” Ling Yunfan was confused. “Which sentence? Oh, be careful on the way? Come back early?”

Ji Canghai smiled gently and spoke an astonishing sentence in a casual tone, “Can I kiss you?”

Ling Yunfan was stunned, like a fish suffocating for lack of oxygen, his mouth slightly agape, his mind blank for three seconds.

Ji Canghai added, “Kiss your forehead.”

“Forehead?” Ling Yunfan’s words were unclear, and he didn’t say yes or no decisively, but he also didn’t refuse. “Oh, forehead, that’s the same as the front of the head?”

Ji Canghai leaned over and gently kissed Ling Yunfan’s forehead, with a bright smile on his face. “I’m going to work now.”

Ling Yunfan stiffened like a stone. “Go, hurry up.”

After Ji Canghai left, Ling Yunfan sat on the bed for a full ten minutes.

Then he slapped himself on the forehead and a strange and overly confident thought came to him.

Could it be that Ji Canghai likes me?

1 This sentence is a bit difficult to translate directly, as it’s a Chinese idiom that doesn’t have a direct equivalent in English. It roughly means “a friend who likes to tease you is still a good friend”, but it’s a pun that plays on the similar pronunciation of “笋” (sǔn, meaning bamboo shoot) and “损” (sǔn, meaning to tease or mock).
