Chapter 424: Dropping the Cover
The two of them listened with peculiar expressions. The Jiangshi King assumed they were afraid, yet unbeknownst to her, this was the most common threatening phrase the two had ever heard in their villainous careers.
The Jiangshi King didn’t possess any luck aura, so Ye Wenxin couldn’t pinpoint her location. But Long Qingyue was different. Her mind-reading ability worked, allowing her to fully grasp the twisted love hidden beneath Mo Rou’s shyness.
“No matter what you say, I only want to be with Qingcheng.”
“That is not real, Mo Niancheng. You can’t keep living in your imaginary world. Take a good look at reality—Gu Qingcheng would never be involved in the affairs of someone as insignificant as you. Or should I kill her too… No, only when I turn this world into one where you’re the only mortal left, will you understand that I am the best for you.”
The Jiangshi King continued to speak, as if reminding Long Qingyue not to long for that person anymore. At this moment, Long Qingyue held Ye Wenxin’s hand tighter and lovingly said, “My Qingcheng is right here.”
That statement completely enraged the Jiangshi King. Ye Wenxin felt like Long Qingyue was throwing her under the bus again, but this time, the situation was getting even more serious.
When she realized that Long Qingyue might have intended to use her to eliminate the Jiangshi King all along, exploiting her poor friend in every possible way, Ye Wenxin couldn’t help but curse aloud.
“Screw you!”
Long Qingyue burst out laughing, but at the same time, the Jiangshi King’s voice resonated, filled with anger. “Fine, I will turn your Gu Qingcheng into a human jigsaw puzzle, and we’ll see if you still love her. Corpse Generals, kill that woman!”
The shadowy figures known as the Corpse Generals quickly charged toward Ye Wenxin.
Ye Wenxin remained calm and unhurried. She took out the umbrella sword, which she had stored in her storage ring. In an instant, the Yin-Yang ghosts appeared in the air, their ghostly forms shielding Ye Wenxin and Long Qingyue.
The umbrella sword split and swept toward the Corpse Generals behind them.
As the umbrella sword was a weapon specifically designed to vanquish demons and evil spirits, its effects were immediately apparent. However, these Corpse Generals were unfazed; they also possessed the ability to divide themselves, so their numbers only grew rather than decreased.
The Jiangshi King still hadn’t made a move, leaving Ye Wenxin uncertain whether her abilities were just that unfathomable, or if she simply had no powers at all. Yet, the sheer number of Corpse Generals was overwhelming, and even the two ghosts were beginning to struggle.
After a moment of thought, Ye Wenxin shouted, “Furballs!”
Eight furballs burst out of the ground, their bodies noticeably larger than before, looking like oversized plush toys. Long Qingyue watched with great interest and reached out to touch the nearest black furball, but it disdainfully dodged her hand.
The furballs displayed human-like expressions, having developed self-awareness thanks to the Yin energy merging with the Colored Flags. Ye Wenxin thought these little creatures were mostly good for being cute and picking up trash. Noticing that Long Qingyue didn’t seem to have any intention of directly dealing with the situation, Ye Wenxin decided to watch how things would unfold. She tossed Long Qingyue onto one of the round furballs, and the two sped down the road on different puffed-up furballs.
Behind them, the Corpse Generals were in hot pursuit, and the Golden Age Dynasty’s Secret Guards also appeared, joining the chaotic battle. The sounds of wind, rain, and shouting all blended together, becoming a cacophony that pierced the ears. It was a tremendous clamor, and with the cultivators’ abilities in play, the destruction only escalated.
Meanwhile, the Mo Clan was hastily organizing an evacuation. On the road, Ye Wenxin encountered three frantic clan leaders. When she inquired, she learned that Mo Rou was missing. Ye Wenxin suspected that the real Mo Rou had likely met a grim fate long ago. However, given the dire circumstances, she couldn’t reveal the harsh truth. Instead, she reassured everyone, promising they would continue the search.
In less than the time it would take for an incense stick to burn, Mo Clan Village had turned into a hellish scene. Flames and lightning, frost and wild winds filled the air as cultivators and Corpse Generals fiercely battled, with neither side gaining a clear advantage.
Ye Wenxin had already left the city, and was staring blankly at the battle unfolding inside. Long Qingyue stood beside her, her face betraying no emotion. She felt neither sympathy for the Jiangshi King nor pity for the common people.
Long Qingyue was calm to the point of being heartless, and Ye Wenxin watched her with a complicated expression. She wanted to ask Long Qingyue if she could end this senseless battle, but Long Qingyue suddenly sighed and lightly touched her hand.
However, it was just a light touch, as if it were merely to catch Ye Wenxin’s attention.
“Qingcheng, this is not the outcome I wanted,” said Long Qingyue, but this time she used a woman’s voice. Her gaze fell on Ye Wenxin, who showed no sign of surprise on her face.
“So, you did find out after all.”
Ye Wenxin quickly tried to feign surprise, but seemed to realize that it was too late. She had become good at acting, at pretending, but in front of this person alone, she still couldn’t hide anything about herself.
“Well, we are best friends.”
Long Qingyue smiled and no longer hid her true identity. In an instant, her true appearance came to the surface. Compared to Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng, Long Qingyue was much more refined. Instead of being overwhelmingly beautiful, she stood out more in terms of her distinguished temperament.
The Secret Guards who were still helping the villagers showed expressions of fear just upon seeing Long Qingyue’s face in all her glory. Xiao Zhang, who had been pretending to be Ye Wenxin, felt her blood run cold as she realized the person she had developed feelings for over the past few days was actually Long Qingyue. She was utterly embarrassed and bewildered.
Yet Long Qingyue simply smiled gently and asked Ye Wenxin, “Can you carry me?”
Ye Wenxin still had many questions in her mind, but she nodded and lifted Long Qingyue into her arms. Long Qingyue didn’t continue to joke around and instead spoke seriously: “Qingcheng, let’s go and take care of this matter.”
Ye Wenxin gave another nod and flew away with Long Qingyue in tow. This time, however, there was a red flower beneath Ye Wenxin’s feet.
“Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng?!”
“That was not Miss Ye pretending to be her?”
The people were completely confused whether this Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng was real or not. However, everyone knew that Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng was the one person Long Qingyue wouldn’t mistake. If that person was indeed the real Demon Lord Gu Qingcheng, though, where had Ye Wenxin gone?
Someone also noticed Ye Wenxin, who was actually Xiao Zhang in disguise, and pointed at her in confusion, saying, “Isn’t Miss Ye Wenxin over here?”
Xiao Zhang forced a weak smile. She wanted to tell everyone that she was actually Xiao Zhang but, recalling something, she swallowed those words. Instead, she continued mimicking Ye Wenxin’s tone and stayed with the crowd.
The real Ye Wenxin, unaware of all this, was still holding Long Qingyue. Long Qingyue laughed heartily, “Are you abandoning your cover identity?”
Having not fought alongside Long Qingyue for so long, Ye Wenxin felt a surge of excitement. She smiled and replied, “Hehe, as long as I have you, I fear nothing in this life!”
