Chapter 77.1
Han Cheng had been exercising regularly and arrived at the military hospital at the speed of a 100-meter sprint, taking less time than usual when he rode a bicycle.
Tonight, coincidentally, the round-faced nurse on duty was named Shen Zhaozhao. She was very curious and asked, “Director Han, why did you come back at this hour?”
Han Cheng bent down and supported his knees with both hands. He was sweating profusely and panting heavily. He said, “Where is my wife?”
Shen Zhaozhao widened her eyes in surprise: “Your wife?”
Han Cheng continued casually, “The person who was sent here by Zhao Xianfeng and Zhou Yuhua!”
The senior nurse returned to the front desk and said, “Director Han, the patient was just transferred from the emergency room to Room 208 on the second floor.”
Before she could finish her sentence, a gust of wind flashed before Shen Zhaozhao’s eyes, and Director Han disappeared.
Shen Zhaozhao couldn’t believe her eyes and blinked. “Li Jie, was that person just now Director Han?” Shen Zhaozhao wasn’t entirely certain; this completely overturned her previous impression of Director Han as someone unshakable like Mount Tai.
The head nurse tapped the young nurse’s head and said, “Director Han’s wife is pregnant and also has gastroenteritis. How can he not be anxious?”
Shen Zhaozhao touched her head, his already large eyes widening like two copper bells. “Pregnant?!”
The head nurse replied, “The test results haven’t come out yet, but I’m almost certain. Don’t go around spreading the news.”
Shen Zhaozhao nodded and said, “Hmm, I won’t spread it around.”
Han Cheng sprinted to Room 208. With elderly people and children at home and the security guard absent, Zhao Xianfeng had already left, but Zhou Yuhua was beside the bed. The person lying on the bed had an IV needle in their hand, her face was as pale as snow, devoid of any color, and her lips were tightly pressed together with closed eyes. Only the long eyelashes trembled slightly when they frowned.
When Zhou Yuhua heard the door opening, thinking it was a nurse, she turned around and saw Han Cheng. At first, she was stunned, but then she gestured to him to be quiet by placing a finger on her lips, indicating that they should talk outside.
“You came back at just the right time. Xiaoxiao had a bad stomach and got gastroenteritis. She had been vomiting and having diarrhea, and now she’s a bit dehydrated. You might become a father again, but we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to know for sure. We haven’t used any medicine without proper consultation. The main treatment is to replenish with physiological saline, and she should have a light diet for the next few days. Take good care of her.” Zhou Yuhua explained.
Han Cheng is also a doctor, so he knew this basic knowledge, but he still listened attentively as Zhou Yuhua explained.
Han Cheng sincerely thanked her: “Both of you, thank you for your help. I’ll take care of Xiaoxiao. You can go back first.”
Zhou Yuhua replied: “Can you handle it? She doesn’t need to stay in the hospital. Once she finishes her injection, you can take her home. If you don’t go back tonight, your three kids will cause havoc in your absence. How about I wait until she finishes her treatment and then give you all a ride home?”
Zhao Xianfeng ran back and left the car for them.
Zhou Yuhua truly admired how Su Xiaoxiao had taken care of her children as a stepmother. It was evident that all the kids treated her as their own mother, which wouldn’t have been possible without her loving and caring attitude.
Han Cheng nodded and said, “It’s okay. I’ve had enough sleep on the train. I’ll borrow the director’s car to take her back later.”
After Zhou Yuhua left, Han Cheng went back to the office to change his clothes and disinfect his entire body.
Returning to room 208, Su Xiaoxiao had already opened her eyes and looked at the ceiling without focusing. When she heard the sound of the door opening, she turned her head to look at the door. Her eyes met Han Cheng’s as he walked in.
Su Xiaoxiao had not yet regained her composure, with her lips slightly open and her gentle, teary eyes still tinged with uncertainty and confusion.
It wasn’t until Han Cheng sat down on her bed and firmly pressed his slightly cool, thin lips against hers that she shifted from being dazed to pleasantly surprised. She struggled to get up from the bed and exclaimed, “Han Cheng, you’re back!”
The sweet and delighted voice made Han Cheng’s heart feel a pang of sourness. He reached out and held her, saying, “Don’t move, you still have the IV.”
Su Xiaoxiao lowered her eyes and looked at the needle in her hand, touching her lower abdomen, and pouted: “Han Cheng, I have a stomachache. I don’t know if it will affect the baby inside.”
Han Cheng touched her forehead and gently kissed it, reassuring her, “It’s okay, it won’t affect the baby. Don’t worry, just rest for a few days.”
Su Xiaoxiao is almost certain that she is pregnant because her period hasn’t come for many days. She had planned to wait for Han Cheng to return and then go to the hospital for a checkup, but she ended up having the examination under
“Right.” Su Xiaoxiao rubbed her head against Han Cheng’s hand. “I felt relieved as soon as you came back. I couldn’t sleep well for several nights, and my immune system might be a bit low due to poor sleep. I haven’t been eating much meat for many days, and this morning I had fried dough sticks, and the braised pork tonight was a bit fatty, so my stomach couldn’t handle it. The kids have been well-behaved and capable. You should praise them.”
Su Xiaoxiao’s voice is tender and soft, with tired hoarseness when she mumbles. There’s also a hint of unconscious coquettishness. As she speaks, her voice gradually fades away.
Only then did Han Cheng notice the dark circles under his wife’s eyes. It wasn’t just a few nights of poor sleep; she probably hadn’t slept well since he left for the business trip.
Han Cheng walked to the other side of the bed, grabbed her hand, and kissed it gently. He looked at her sleeping face while listening to the saline solution dripping into her body through the IV tube.
Han Cheng watched his wife quietly for over an hour until the solution bottle was empty. He raised his hand and looked at the table below. It was already ten o’clock, and if it weren’t for the three starving children at home, Han Cheng would have wanted to rest here with her. She looked extremely exhausted.
Han Cheng brought the adhesive tape and disinfectant cotton swabs and carefully removed the needle.
In her half-asleep state, Su Xiaoxiao woke up again. Han Cheng calmly said, “Just rest assured and sleep. I’ll find a car to take you home.”
Su Xiaoxiao’s eyelids struggled briefly, but when she heard Han Cheng’s voice, she fell asleep with peace of mind.
Han Cheng borrowed a car from the hospital director and returned it. He carefully picked up Su Xiaoxiao, who woke up briefly and looked at his handsome face in a daze. Han Cheng kissed her and said, “It’s alright, go back to sleep. Let’s go home.”
Su Xiaoxiao found a comfortable position in his arms and furrowed her brows, saying, “I need to use the restroom.”
Han Cheng carried her to the restroom, and when he came out, Su Xiaoxiao had fallen asleep in his arms once again.
The tall and handsome Director Han walked past the front desk with the petite woman in his arms. The round-faced nurse wanted to greet them but was silenced by a single glance from Han Cheng, who pressed his lips together.
Then the little nurse stood on tiptoe and watched as Director Han carefully placed her lover in the back of the car like a fragile treasure. He whispered something softly, lowered her head, and then gently closed the car door. The car slowly drove out of the hospital.
The head nurse knocked on the young nurse’s head and asked, “Snap out of it! Why have you been staring at Director Han?”
Shen Zhaozhao shook her head enviously and said, “I never thought that our stern Director Han could be so gentle. I’m really envious of his wife.”
The head nurse replied, “Before you envy her, you should first find out who Director Han’s lover is. Have you seen how tender she is with the children? Have you seen how much the children adore their stepmother more than their biological mother?”
She had indeed seen it. On several occasions, from a distance, she had witnessed Director Han’s wife bending down or squatting to talk to the children. Her face always exuded gentleness and a smile. The children looked at her with admiration and complete trust, their innocent eyes filled with affection. A woman who could be such a caring stepmother naturally deserved tender treatment from Director Han.
