They didn’t have to wait until next month. When Su Xiaoxiao woke up from her nap at noon, feeling dizzy, it frightened Han Cheng to the point that he forgot he was a doctor.

Han Cheng didn’t want the children to worry, so he came up with an excuse and said to the children, “In the afternoon, take your little brother to school, and I’ll take Xiaoxiao to the hospital for a routine check-up.”

The cubs all knew what a “routine check-up” meant. Su Xiaoxiao was afraid they would worry, so the last time Han Cheng had taken her to the hospital, he had explained to them what a routine check-up was. That time, he had also asked them to take Xiao Doubao to school, so this time, they didn’t suspect anything.

Xiao Doubao was particularly popular with his big brothers’ classmates. He sat quietly in class, following his big brothers, sometimes writing and drawing, sometimes playing with the puzzles his dad made for him.

Xiao Doubao neatly packed his favorite things into his chicken-shaped backpack and happily held his brothers’ hands to go to school.

Han Cheng said, “It’s okay,” but he still supported her carefully to the back seat of the car and added a thick coat to her waist before slowly driving back to the hospital.

When the couple arrived at the hospital, the plump-faced nurse, Shen Zhaozhao, stared at Su Xiaoxiao’s belly with wide eyes.

When they walked away, she asked the head nurse, “Is Dr. Han’s wife going to give birth? I remember she was just this pregnant half a month ago.” Shen Zhaozhao gestured with her hand on her own belly.

The head nurse withdrew her envious gaze and said angrily, “Aren’t you the one who’s always gossiping? How can you not even know that Dr. Han’s wife might be expecting twins? I don’t think there’s any doubt now. With the way she’s grown, it’s probably close to a sure thing.”

Shen Zhaozhao’s eyes widened even more, and Chen Aimin happened to walk in from outside. Shen Zhaozhao bounced over to him.

Chen Aimin almost bumped into her, quickly stepping back a few paces. He said, “This chubby girl… This is a hospital, can you be a bit more composed? Why are you always making so much noise?”

Shen Zhaozhao continued her gossip, “Is Dr. Han’s wife pregnant with twins?”

Chen Aimin was speechless and knocked on Shen Zhaozhao’s head with the documents in his hand. “Why are you so gossipy all the time? I’m not an obstetrician-gynecologist. How would I know?”

Shen Zhaozhao didn’t believe it. “You have a good relationship with Head Han, and you’re in the same department. How could you not know?”

Chen Aimin didn’t have time to bother with her. “Even if I know, I won’t tell you. Move aside; I need to get back to work.” Besides, he genuinely didn’t know. Head Han was tight-lipped, and he really wanted to find out!

Shen Zhaozhao pouted, “I won’t bring you buns next time!”

Chen Aimin immediately stopped in his tracks and took a few steps back. “Oh, the beautiful and kind-hearted Nurse Shen, Director Han really didn’t tell me. I genuinely don’t know.”

Chen Aimin remembered how he had salivated over the steamed buns she had brought last time. He initially thought she was just bragging about her dad being a great chef at a state-owned restaurant. However, after tasting one of those buns, he wholeheartedly believed her words. He even wanted to have a bite the next time she brought something delicious.

Shen Zhaozhao looked at him suspiciously and asked, “Really?”

Chen Aimin replied, “Why would I lie to you? Not to mention you, the entire department is more curious than you.”

On Su Xiaoxiao’s side

After a follow-up examination, it was finally confirmed that she was carrying twins. Her dizziness was due to mild anemia and low blood sugar caused by inadequate rest. The doctor advised her to rest more, eat more meat, or have some soup for a while. If she still felt uncomfortable, they might need to prescribe some pregnancy-safe medicine next time.

During the early stages of her pregnancy, Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t stomach meat, but in the past two months, her condition has improved. However, her appetite still wasn’t as good as it was before she got pregnant.

Han Cheng took Su Xiaoxiao back to his office to rest, made some sugar water for her to drink, and gently touched her head. “I’ll take a leave, just wait for me here. I’ll be back soon.”

Su Xiaoxiao held Han Cheng’s hand and looked up at him. “How about I wait in your rest area and read a book? We can leave together after you finish work.”

Han Cheng shook his head. “There’s nothing urgent today. I’ll go to the school in the meantime.”

Su Xiaoxiao blinked. “Why are you going to school? I can’t just stop teaching the class. At the very least, I should wait until the handover is done before leaving.”

Han Cheng nodded and said, “I know, but during the handover period, you need to reschedule your classes to the afternoon. You should rest in the morning.”

Su Xiaoxiao replied, “It’s not necessary. I can hold on for a few more days.”

Han Cheng gently rubbed her head and said, “Be obedient. I’ll be back soon.” With that, he left the office.

Su Xiaoxiao lowered her gaze and touched her belly. “Baby, it’s Mom’s fault. Daddy is getting worried. Can you behave a little better?”

In her previous life, Su Xiaoxiao had seen some husbands be even more anxious than their wives during pregnancy, and when the wife was fine, the husband ended up suffering from some form of antenatal or postnatal depression. She used to find it quite unbelievable, but now she thinks it is entirely possible.

Perhaps her emotions were affecting Han Cheng. Although he didn’t say it and remained calm in front of her, Su Xiaoxiao knew that he was indeed getting nervous, maybe even more so than she was.

Su Xiaoxiao sighed and said, “It seems I need to relax a bit in the future.” Su Xiaoxiao touched her stomach again. “You’re both doing well, aren’t you, my little ones?”

It was as if the baby in Su Xiaoxiao’s belly could sense her, moving particularly vigorously this time, as if saying, “Mom, look how well we’re doing.”

Su Xiaoxiao took a deep breath, smiled softly, and said, “Mom understands. Mom will try to stay relaxed from now on. We won’t be nervous.”

Otherwise, she was genuinely worried that if she continued to be too anxious, Han Cheng might collapse.

The struggle was real. Occasionally, her emotions were a bit off, but most of the time, everything was fine, thanks to those pesky hormones.
