The servant who came to deliver the message was taken aback and stammered, “Master, the servant just said that the steward has brought the Second Young Master back.”
Bai Ji suppressed his excitement and asked again, “Where did you hear this news?”
“Master, the servant saw it with my own eyes just now,” the messenger servant realized and answered respectfully, “The steward has already brought him inside.”
Bai Ji found it hard to believe. Could it be true?
When disasters struck Changding wang’s fiefdom, he had also sent many people to find his younger brother and niece, but they returned empty-handed.
For a long time, he had been constantly seeking information.
However, with the continuous reports of the dire situation outside, he had long lost hope in his heart.
Who could have imagined hearing this news at such a time!
Bai Ji even forgot how to react.
He lifted his foot, but was afraid that it might all be false.
Just as he hesitated, the voice of the steward, came through.
“Master, the Second Young Master has returned!” said the steward.
Bai Ji startled, lifted his eyes and looked in the direction of the voice.
The steward, accompanied by a large group of people, walked in from behind the Crescent Moon Gate.
They were a formidable group, numbering over twenty.
However, Bai Ji’s eyes immediately fell on Bai Wu, who was walking alongside the steward in the crowd.
As the group passed through the Crescent Moon Gate, they also noticed the messenger servant and another middle-aged man who appeared somewhat astute, both standing in front of a house, engaged in conversation.
Bai Wu took a few quick steps, surpassing the steward, and exclaimed excitedly, “Big brother!”
Bai Ji finally snapped back to reality, realizing that all of this was true.
He, too, moved towards Bai Wu in excitement, paying no mind to the dirt on Bai Wu’s body, and firmly grasped his shoulders with his hands.
“You’re my second brother?”
Bai Wu joyfully replied, “Yes, it’s me, big brother.”
Bai Ji glanced behind, concerned, and asked, “And Miaqing? Has she returned safely as well?”
Bai Wu beckoned towards the back and said, “She’s here. Miaqing, come and greet your uncle.”
Bai Miaqing walked over and respectfully performed a junior’s greeting, saying, “Greetings, Uncle.”
Bai Ji looked at his safe second brother and his gentle and lovely niece standing right in front of him, and his heart finally found peace.
He laughed heartily and called out multiple times, the joy in his voice almost overflowing.
“It’s good that you’re back. It’s good that you’re back.”
The three of them stood there exchanging pleasantries for a while, and then Bai Ji remembered that the steward had brought back many other people.
“Who are these people?” he asked.
Bai Wu hurriedly introduced, “Big brother, thanks to them, Miaqing and I were able to arrive safely here!”
As he spoke, he quickly introduced the group of people from the Shen family one by one.
However, when introducing Fei Yanchen, Ji Xun, and the Hua siblings, he only gave a brief explanation.
He looked towards the Shen family and introduced, “This is my big brother, as everyone should already know.”
Bai Ji greeted the Shen family and said, “Everyone, don’t just stand here. Let’s go to the reception hall.”
The group shifted their location and headed towards the reception hall in the front courtyard.
The Bai Residence had a considerable area, and after leaving Bai Ji’s study, they had to pass through a small garden before reaching the front hall.
While passing through the garden, they coincidentally encountered a middle-aged woman who appeared quite wealthy, coming towards them.
Two maids followed behind the woman, and one of them softly reminded, “Madam, it’s the master.”
Upon hearing the maid’s reminder, Madam Bai looked towards the other side of the garden and indeed saw Bai Ji and the group of people behind him.
In the center of the garden, the two groups met face to face.
Madam Bai called out, “Master.”
Bai Ji smiled and asked, “Madam, you’re back. Has anything happened at the clinic?”
Madam Bai nodded and said, “Indeed, there are some matters. I will discuss them in detail with you later, when we have rested for the night.”
Then she looked at the group of people behind Bai Ji, her gaze pausing for a moment on Bai Wu’s face, which bore some resemblance to Bai Ji’s.
She asked, “Who are these people? Why didn’t my husband mention that we would have guests today?”
She mentally reviewed Bai Wu’s appearance and asked in surprise, “Could this person be our second brother?”
Bai Ji stepped forward and stood beside Madam Bai, smiling as he said, “Madam is truly wise and has guessed correctly.”
Madam Bai opened her mouth, wanting to ask Bai Wu how he had returned, but she held back.
She shifted her gaze towards the Shen family and asked, “And who are these people?”
Bai Ji said, “These are all the people who returned with my second brother. They have helped him and Miaqing a lot along the way.”
Madam Bai looked at the weary appearance of the group, covered in dust, and scolded, “Just returned, and you didn’t arrange guest rooms for them to freshen up?”
Bai Ji slapped his forehead in frustration and said, “You’re right, Madam. Steward, quickly take the guests to the guest rooms to rest. Later, I will have the servants deliver meals to each of their rooms. Let’s gather and have a proper reunion tonight.”
Just moments ago, he had received the news of Bai Wu’s return and was eager to have a good conversation with them, but he had forgotten that they had just returned after facing numerous hardships and were exhausted.
The Shen family and their group were escorted to their respective guest rooms.
Shortly after Shen Yu’an arrived in her room, hot water and fresh clothes were promptly delivered by the servants.
Shen Yu’an felt that Bai Ji and Madam Bai’s arrangements were quite thoughtful.
She lay in the bathtub and let out a contented sigh.
This is how life should be lived~
During the five months of fleeing, although they never ran out of water, they never had the opportunity to take a proper bath like this.
Shen Yu’an thoroughly cleaned the dirt off her body before getting out of the bathtub.
She put on the clothes that had just been delivered by the servant.
The fabric of the clothes was of good quality, similar to the material worn by Madam Bai earlier, and the color was a dark, subdued purple.
The color indeed resembled what married women like Madam Bai would wear.
Shen Yu’an noticed that the clothes were slightly loose on her.
Outside, a maid heard the movement inside and softly said, “Miss, have you finished dressing? I will bring in the meal.”
Shen Yu’an’s cool voice came from inside the room, “Come in.”
