Chapter 108: Death Foretold

Normal supernaturals possess only one type of ability, but there exist extremely rare cases of dual abilities.

The probability of this is even lower than that of spatial ability users.

In the case of spatial abilities, you might find one among five or six thousand people.

Dual-ability supernaturals are far more powerful than their peers; their crystals emit a constant stream of energy, continuously tempering the physical constitution of the ability user.

While dual-ability supernaturals don’t have two crystals, the quality of their crystal is greatly enhanced, surpassing it by roughly two levels.

For example, a dual-ability user at the fifth level may not have the same quantity of energy within their crystal as a seventh-level crystal, but its quality matches that of a seventh-level crystal.

Of course, the tempering of a seventh-level crystal is superior to that of a fifth-level one.

Dual-ability supernaturals do not start with two abilities; they awaken only their first ability, just like normal individuals, with the second ability remaining concealed.

There are two ways to awaken the second ability.

The first is to be subjected to some form of stimulus, such as experiencing extreme emotional fluctuations.

The second way, for instance, if someone initially possesses lightning abilities and then gains fire abilities as their second ability, absorbing a sufficient amount of fire energy will aid in awakening the second ability.

In his past life, Chen Luo reached the King level and experimented with various abilities like Light, Dark, Thunder, Fire, Nature, and so on. He tried almost all of them but couldn’t awaken any. There was one exceptional ability that he couldn’t experiment with extensively because in the entire world, Chen Luo only encountered one person with that ability.

Even though he absorbed it, it seemed like nothing changed. Oh, and there was also the Prophecy ability, something Chen Luo had never seen in his past life.

Later on, Chen Luo gave up, thinking that he wasn’t a dual-ability user. Dual-ability users were powerful, but they had a drawback – they needed double the crystal energy to advance. The progression of dual-ability users was not fast; it remained at the same speed as it was originally. Abilities were about categories, and talent depended on one’s constitution. Quick absorption by the crystal was the key.

While others could advance in a month, dual-ability users required two months. It seemed the later the awakening of the second ability, the better. That way, they wouldn’t be constrained by the doubled energy requirement.

Chen Luo hadn’t expected that the person before him, Xu Yang, was a dual-ability user who had successfully awakened his second ability. Xu Yang was also puzzled – when did he learn to control fire?

It was a rare occurrence to meet a dual-ability user, but it was unfortunate that he was about to die at Chen Luo’s hands. What use was it to have such a rare ability if he intended to kill him?

In theory, Chen Luo should have nurtured Xu Yang, waiting for him to reach the fifth level, then he could obtain a seventh-level quality crystal, although it would contain less energy.

However, there were a couple of issues. Firstly, the growth was too slow. Secondly, everyone had their limits; some people reached the fourth level and couldn’t continue to grow, no matter how much crystal energy they absorbed.

Xu Yang, holding both Thunder and Fire in his hands, though bewildered, quickly regained his composure. This was not the time to be bewildered.

Chen Luo sneered, “Daring to resist now, so you don’t need to hide anymore, right?”

“I’m curious, why do you want to kill me?” Xu Yang asked angrily.

“You set such strict conditions and made things difficult for people. My brother died because of you, and you’re living comfortably, giving orders at home and playing around. Shouldn’t someone like you die?” Xu Yang vented his frustration.

Chen Luo was speechless, an innocent victim. It was as if he had caused the world’s end and all the suffering Xu Yang endured.

Had he begged Xu Yang to join? Blaming someone else when you acted cowardly was unreasonable.

Fortunately, Chen Luo had Rice on his side; otherwise, someone harboring such grudges might have killed someone in a sneak attack.

Xu Yang’s lightning ability had elements of fire, and the fireballs contained traces of lightning, which made them more powerful. However, for Chen Luo, they were still not enough to be a threat.

Chen Luo didn’t hold back and slapped him to death.

“Wasn’t it your brother’s choice to sacrifice himself?” Chen Luo questioned.

Soon, in Chen Luo’s hand appeared a pale purple crystal, with a hint of light red mixed in. This crystal had the quantity of a second-level crystal but the quality of a fourth-level crystal. Not bad, a bit stronger than a third-level crystal.

By around ten o’clock, the members who had gone outside began to return one by one.

Shu Yun reported, “We’ve cleared out most of the nearby zombies, and there are no areas nearby with a shortage of zombies. Also, the roads have been cleared. I encountered another group today, and they even helped us kill some zombies.”

Shu Yun chuckled, knowing they didn’t really need help killing zombies.

“They stationed themselves in areas with fewer people, set traps, and waited for zombies to wander into their trap. It’s not the most efficient method, but it’s safe. If they spend enough time guarding, they can kill quite a few zombies in a day,” Shu Yun explained.

Chen Luo nodded. The areas on the outermost perimeter of the district had fewer zombies, and survivors had gathered there to continually clear out the undead.

Soon, the entire outer perimeter would be connected, the zombies would be cleared out, and survivors would be able to communicate with each other safely.

The outer perimeter is only relative, as the Divine City consists of 14 districts, each with areas where fewer people reside.

After clearing away the obstacles, survivors throughout the Divine City will be able to communicate with each other.

Chen Luo estimated that there are currently around 500,000 survivors in the Divine City.

Chen Luo cautioned, “Be careful; some survivors can be even more frightening than the zombies…”

Two days later, with the assistance of the sixth-level crystal, Rice successfully reached the fourth level of development.

Chen Luo quickly inquired, “Rice, have you learned any new abilities? Or, can you see if anything is going to happen to me recently?”

Rice pondered for a moment and replied, “You’re at home every day. What could possibly happen to you?”

Are you implying that I’m just lazing around?

It’s not guaranteed that leveling up will result in learning new abilities. Perhaps Rice’s perceptual abilities have improved, but it’s hard to tell.

The next morning, Chen Luo, as usual, held Rice and watched as the team members departed. However, Rice’s gaze was fixed on one person, and in an uncertain tone, it said, “I have a feeling this person is going to die.”

Chen Luo was taken aback. Previously, Rice could only sense the safety of people close to him. Now, it could sense unfamiliar people too?

To verify whether Rice’s prediction was accurate, Chen Luo decided to follow along personally.

The person who was being followed was a member of the Chen family named Xu Mingqing, a wind-element user. With Chen Luo following closely, the group became noticeably more cautious.

Chen Luo refrained from intervening and watched from behind.

The member who Rice had foretold the death of was Xu Mingqing. He stopped behind a tree, distancing himself slightly from the group. When Chen Luo looked up, he saw a zombie cat perched on the tree, confirming Rice’s prediction.

It was a black cat, hiding in the tree, and it was hard to notice without careful observation. It was about to pounce and wildly scratch Xu Mingqing’s face when Chen Luo swiftly swatted it away.

Xu Mingqing, still in shock, thanked Chen Luo.

Back at the base, the Thunderbolt King remained behind, imitating Chen Luo, and lay down on a rocking chair. Rice, on the other hand, settled on top of the Thunderbolt King.

The Thunderbolt King was quite displeased, thinking, “I’m practically becoming the dog of the Elder Dog, and now I have someone lying on top of me?”

Rice said, “Let me lie here for a while, and I’ll have Chen Luo give you ten points.”

The Thunderbolt King agreed, saying, “Deal.”

Suddenly, Rice coughed up blood and passed out.

There’s one more chapter coming, but it will be posted later, so stay tuned.
